Versatile and worthwhile kit [Posted on 2005-12-26]
First off, if you're going to have ANY wood carving tools in the house go click on the "Slip strop" and buy one. The first nine rules of carving wood are "have sharp tools", so learn how to keep an edge on these and you'll have a much more enjoyable time carving.
This kit has a good selection of tools, from a wide barely curved gouge to a tiny V-tool (there are proper names for these but I'll spare you). They are, as promised, sharp. These things just glide right through the wood like they mean it. It makes carving easy, or at least, easier than if I had to struggle with a dull tool. If you've never handled really sharp tools like this, watch your fingers!
At first I was put off by the handle being separate: I thought I'd want handles on each and every tool so I was looking at the Palm Set Combo at first, but in reality it's so easy to change the blade that I haven't noticed it being a drawback. And, as it turns out, it makes sharpening and honing easier for certain profiles.
The tool roll it comes in is useful to keep it all in one place. The practice blank is fun, and gives you something to do right out of the box. So it's a good gift for the budding carver in your life, or yourself if you fancy it.
