Freud's economy line router...big bang for the buck [Posted on 2007-11-25] Hey, this is from Randy, the uncertified Northwoods mechanic/capenter/guide home fix-it guy. EH?
I just got the Freud 3/14 H variable speed plunge router as a gift to myself, after having sworn at, kicked, and almost thrown my venerable OLD Sears fixed base monster.
what's not to like? I was suspicious at first, a REAL Freud for $115. But it stacks up nicely, like the firewood outside my homemade wood stove.
The plunge mechanism works flawlessly. Smooth and accurate. EASY bit changes, I mean in seconds, and the nice folks at Freud even include a 1/4" collet to expand the possibilities of wood butchering.Wish they'd included a nut. Variable speeds unlike my Craftsman...(I'd used a Harbor Freight router speed set up with no issues with but its AWESOME to dial the speed in. I do have to say I don't like the position of the on/off switch, but I think its because I automatically search the handle for it still. Handles are a good fit for my huge hands. The dial up mechanism at first looked flimsy, but its not.
I give this router a big FIVE STARS and think, compared to the others in its price range, it stands above the pack.
120 bucks!?!? [Posted on 2007-11-30] Truthfully, I didn't expect a lot of router for 120 bucks. This router was not much more than one third the cost of the PC 7518 3 1/4 h.p. model on my router table. I've had this router but a short time and I have six others so it hasn't seen a lot of use thus far. I did however, give it a good road test. It seems like all 3 1/4 horses are workin' and it runs pretty smoothly too. It doesn't have a lot of frills, although it does have variable speeds and a "soft start" feature. The "soft start" is much appreciated on router with 3 1/4 h.p. Overall, the machine is of very simple but sturdy and effective construction. Nice router. This guy is considerably lighter than the PC 7518 but that's actually desirable in a hand held machine as is my intended use for this one. The edge guide (fence) is really crude and the rods aren't very long but again, it looks to be pretty sturdy. As I've stated I haven't owned this router very long but it gives every indication that it will hold its own for a good while. 120 bucks? Ya gotta have one. Ah. I see they've gone up in price to $130. It's still the best deal going.
Great router for the money! [Posted on 2007-12-04] This router is only a few dollars more than a cheap 1/4" plunge router from a box store, and many times the tool. Since I got it I have been using it extensively for template routing. The soft start makes it much easier to control than my previous 1-HP router, and it's also quieter. Though I haven't cut dovetails with it yet I'm sure it will far exceed my previous router. The only thing it's missing is a height adjustment through the base, but with my router table it's trivial to set this from beneath the table top (which I have been doing for years with my old router anyway), so this doesn't bother me in the least. If you plan on using this primarily in a router table and yours doesn't allow easy access from below to change the height, you should probably look elsewhere. Otherwise, it's hard to go wrong with this tool.
Collet nut removal [Posted on 2007-12-15] I am a new buyer of this router and have noticed on some of the review forums that people are having trouble getting the collet out of the nut. I found that if you are able to close the collet it will fall out of the nut. To this aim I looked for something that would close the collet without damage to it. I found that you can use a 1/2 inch copper sweat fitting to compress the collet. The copper is softer than the collet so should not do any damage to the collet. One should make sure that the fitting is clean and that you are not abraiding the collet with a dirty fittings.
