Very handy and good quality set/great customer service [Posted on 2007-01-16] A set like this is a must for those who want to disasemble their guns without horribly marred screws or scratches to the finish from slips. General purpose screwdriver sets will not give you the precision a specialty gunsmith set will(trust me, I looked).
The set contains 12 different slotted(flathead) bits, in both thick and thin sizes to perfectly match the type of screw, 10 hex bits, and 2 phillips bits(lage and small). All in a small, handy, plastic box. Comes with a great manual.
What's great about this set is the bits are designed to be used by themselves with your fingers, or with a specially designed shaft that gives you great precision and control and helps avoid, one: using too much force, and two: slipping and scratching your beautiful firearm.
I never noticed how difficult it is keeping steady using a screwdriver with a long handle until I used this set. This alone was a reason I would often slip and scratch a finish.
It also comes with a standard screwdriver handle and for even more torque, a rachet. The rachet also helps get into tight places.
A word of caution: The bits on this set, and others like it, are designed to break BEFORE they damage a screw or your weapon. This is not a defect. Better to break a $1 bit than to damage a valuable firearm or strip a screw so bad it can't be removed.
This is a lesson I learned and while I was miffed at first, I was thankful the screw still worked. That said, the bits are by no means weak and give good torque before they break. If you break a bit you are simply using too much force and something is wrong with how you are fitting the parts.
Thankfully, the customer service at Chapman is fantastic and this alone is why I'm even wrting this review.
I called the factory to order a replacement bit expecting to have to pay for it and probably some BS shipping charge(like so many companies exploit now days), but when I explained I had broken a bit on their set, they sent it to me for free, all shipping paid. I still ordered more bits a few days later, since I broke another one and want to keep several on hand, just in case. The prices are inexpensive($0.94 per bit) and they offer very reasonable shipping costs.
The only con with this set for me, and it's a con on my part for not having the right tools, is that on one occasion a perfectly sized bit was a bit too thick. They explain that their bits can be, and should be, grounded to match the slot on a screw exactly. Alas, I don't have a grinder. However, the next size down gave me a proper fit. Also, one of their bits had a burr on it, but I filed it smooth easily enough.
You really can't go wrong with this set. Very precise, well made, and what seems to be a rarity today: fantastic customer service and support, and made in the USA. I'm very happy with mine and so is my Colt 1860 Army!
This Is One Handy Little Kit [Posted on 2007-12-28] I picked this up after fumbling around with different tools at the range to adjust and sight in my AR-15s and M4. They guy on the bench next to me had this kit and I copied down the info. What a convenience to have all the right sizes for any weapon adjustment you need. Great buy, grab one!
