the batteries turned out to be the problem [Posted on 2008-04-08]
I have own this set since 2004 but really there were only 2 summers of normal usage. It worked well at the beginning. I don't have a huge yard and don't want to mess with gas. The idea of 'cordless' appealed to me and it was a great idea to be fair.
Until graduatlly the batteries died one after another after a summer of normal usage. It just simply did not hold the charge any more. Being Ni-CD batteries, I tried to run it down before I recharged, so that it won't retain the memory as I was told.
I took the battries to the service center for replacement as they were under warranty. I got my replacement batteries, but was told by the technician there that I was not supposed to run down the batteries before re-charging it. It did not make sense but I decided to follow that instruction since the batteries did not perform as expected with the other approach.
It is mowing season again and I just found out that one of the batteries is dead again, the other two are also losing charge. Unfortunately it is past the warranty, and I really don't want to spend $30+ for a single battery.
I am getting a electric trimmer, as my wife told me 3 years ago. I am sure I will be hearing 'I told you so' again and again from her. So if you are thinking about buying this set, think again, for your money's worth, and for your pride.

I have had this set for 2.5 years now and I love the storage and convenience of the three batteries. I have a 1/3 acre yard and I go through all three batteries just with the edge trimmer in a single session. I wish the performance was better, but I'm happy to have cordless electric tools. The blower sucks the battery life very quickly. The hedge trimmer works like a champ.
The charger just died, though. I've tried different outlets, moving the batteries around, etc. It's dead. I looked up the replacement part (a hunting experience on B&D's website) and it will cost $49.41. This doesn't make me very happy.
Good lawncare tools for a small yard [Posted on 2008-04-26]
All in all this is a decent collection of tools for a small yard (where lawns are measured in square feet, instead of acres....)
Hedge Trimmer: This was a replacement for a electric (corded) hedge trimmer. And a good tool. It has a good amount of power to cut through my hedges and does a nice job. My old one didn't seem to cut through more than just rip. This one does pretty well. I also have a pole (corded) hedge trimmer for tall ones. This one does feel like it has less power, but the convenience makes up for it.
String Trimmer/Edger: Coming from a gas string trimmer, this has considerably less power to get through thick grass, but all in all it's pretty good. I almost return this whole set because this piece wasn't cutting anything. TIP: check your spool of string. The way mine was wrung, there was no way that it would auto-extend itself. I had to open it up and pull it loose. After that, it worked pretty well. WAY less vibration than a gas string trimmer (which made my hands numb after working for a while). You lose some in power but the convenience is nice.
Hard Broom Sweep: This is probably the weakest piece in this set. When they say broom sweep, they really mean it. If you couldn't clean it with a broom, this thing won't blow it. Relatively low velocity output. It's not bad as a quick way to blow off a deck, garage or driveway with some loose dirt or DRY leaves on it, but don't expect much more from this. Not the real reason I got this set, it was more of a bonus.
Convenient and Works Surprisingly Well [Posted on 2008-05-05]
Great product. All three tools are light weight and easy to use and the mounting system for batteries and the tools works great.
*** These are not a replacement for gas powered tools. *** If you need power and long run times for clearing heavy brush and grass, then these are not the tools for you.
However, if your trimming / edging is limited to cleaning up around planting beds, edging the drive way, and trimming around the house and fence, then this the trimmer is more than adequate. I have a 1/2 acre lot, with lots of trimming and I can typically do the entire property with 1.5 to 2 batteries. This of course depends on how over grown I allow the yard to get. the 180 degree swivel head makes edging a breeze and the automatic line feed system works flawlessly.
The blower, is really a battery operated broom, so don't expect it to blow leaves out of your yard. It is designed to clean hard surfaces and it excels at that task. It can clear debris from you drive and walk, with out blowing all of your mulch away.
The hedge trimmer works well, it is light weight and convenient to use.
Great Set, Good Value, Excellent Product Line [Posted on 2008-05-09]
I bought these shortly after buying Black & Decker's cordless electric lawn mower (which I also love), and I wasn't disappointed.
The trimmer/hedge trimmer/blower work as you'd expect, the trimmer even features a telescoping body to adjust comfortably to your height. They are also relatively quiet and require no gasoline can or earplugs!
The best part is that you get all three units for the price of just two of them sold separately! Plus, an unexpected but very welcome bonus is that this set comes with its own plastic mount for all three tools AND a separate mount for the batteries. I wouldn't have considered this a big selling point, had I read it, but having the ability to easily hang the tools in my garage out of the way and out of the reach of my kids is more valuable than I expected.
Bravo Black & Decker!
-1 star, however, because my package came with only two batteries (though to B&D's credit, they sent the third with minimal fuss once I contacted customer support).
Oh, and once you buy these suckers, beware! Black & Decker have a whole product line of cordless drills, saws, sanders and other power tools that run on the 18-volt battery system, and once they pull you into the product line, all the other 18-volt products become pretty enticing!
