Pleased but mixed feelings [Posted on 2008-04-28] PROs: Electric meant not hard starting or dealing with gas and oil and all the inherent problems with it. The height adjusting is very easy to change.
CONs: Heavier than I thought heavier than most gas mower, meaning that anything greater than 30 degree grade is difficult. Its still loud, sounds like a box fan on high setting, wished it was 50% lighter and a lot more quiet.
MISC: I took the advise of the others and spray some non-stick oil on the under side, my advise ---> place newspaper or cardboard under the mower overnight so you don't have the oil drip onto your garage and it will stop most clumps, but will stain green even after a spray down.
If you try to do a quick charge cause you forgot to charge it the last 2 times, and left the start key in it, BE CAREFUL, the key WILL BURN YOU.
WISHES: Beside lighter wieght, and optional self-propel, a removable battery, battery life left indicator on the mower.
a A/C plug-in for extra power or dummies who forgot to charge it.
Final notes: for the price, considering the weight and the absent mindness of me, of forgetting to charge it, and no optional plug-in or removable battery, I prob would not buy it, unless it was $250-$300.
But if it had all the wishes/wants that I longed for, then I would prob buy it $400, esp with no tax and free shipping. hopefully Black & Decker is listening, otherwise I may go for a different manufacturer next time.
The Prius of Mowers [Posted on 2008-04-29] This is a super mower, with much to recommend it.
+ Mows well. Its swath is a hair narrower than most gas mowers I've used and it can scalp, but my standard of satisfaction is not getting ticketed by the city, and in this it keeps me out of trouble. I was particularly worried that it would lose consciousness in thick grass, but it does fine, better even than the expensive gas mower it replaced.
+Weighs no more than a biggish gas mower. Best on flat lots.
+Plenty of mowing on single charge for a small-to-medium yard.
+Overwinters well inside. I read of owners who had radically reduced mowing time after leaving theirs outside in a cold winter. After fall use, mine wintered in a 55-degree basement, plugged in at least some of the time, and now, the following spring, I can detect no reduction in mowing time.
+Green. At least I take on faith that it is. I can only hope that the harm of the coal and coal emissions that power some of my electricity is less than the gas and exhaust at point of use.
+Starts right up. This is amazing. No white-knuckled yanking at the ripcord. No flooded engine. No wondering what to do with stale gasoline. Phenomenal.
+Quiet. Whoever said it sounds like a big box fan is spot on. The different sound will start conversations with your neighbors about low-impact yard work. And it stops immediately.
+Home delivery. While you should make every effort to support a local non-big-box store that sells these, if you find none as I did, you'll be pampered by having the beast delivered to your front porch.
-Not easily swappable battery. This will be a modest problem when the battery ages, but it should be as recyclable as a car battery.
In sum, much recommended. Best is not having yard to mow. Next best is a reel mower, a challenge in thick Midwestern grass. If you fail on the first two counts, buy this, the Prius of mowers.
Great for a small yard [Posted on 2008-04-30] My yard is 1/4 acre with a mix of Bermuda grass and St. Agustine. The mower does a good job cutting the grass with the mulching blade cutting the grass into small pieces. I had battery power left after mowing the yard. The mower is easy to use and re-charges withing 8 hours.
Stay Away - Worst B&D product I ever owned [Posted on 2008-05-02] I had the earlier CMM1000 version - still 24V. Worthless if you didn't cut when the grass when it grew a mere 1" or was even slightly damp. My lawn is about 4000 sq feet and a full charge just made it through. If the grass was a little high or damp, it would take 2 charges. I finally sold it and went back to gas mower. The motivation was - if I got tied up and didn't get it mowed soon enough, I had to pay the neighbor kid to mow my lawn cause the B&D would not make it through or simplely would not cut. He had a gas mower. B&D replaced the mower once, but I had the same problem with the new one - JUNK!
I'll take a yearly tune-up any day.
Great mower! [Posted on 2008-05-02] After a little trial-and-error with the height adjustment, this mower worked like a champ. I would recommend to anyone who wants a simple, efficient, hassle-free mower that is ready to go anytime. It has sufficient power for the average yard, but it may be difficult to do a large or overgrown yard.
