Cordless trimmer [Posted on 2005-09-30] Works great. Can do the whole yard (corner lot) twice on one charge.
Cordless Drawback [Posted on 2005-10-03] I've owned this trimmer for about 2 years and hadn't had any problems. This weekend I ran into one. It got stuck in the on position and wouldn't turn off. With a corded/gas powered trimmer this wouldn't be a major issue, cut the power supply and it stops. With a fully charged cordless model, there's no way to stop it. One benefit, was that I could use the trimmer one handed . On top of that, the line quit self feeding after about ten minutes, so it was running and I couldn't even use it. The 1-800 number for Black & Decker is only available from 8-5 weekdays (when most homeowners are actually at work not doing yardwork). I propped it up on a cooler in the driveway and let the battery run down for 2 hours. I'm sure the neighbors loved that.
Great Product [Posted on 2008-04-12] This was my first time purchasing a cordless trimmer and I am sooooo happy with it. I have close to an acre of ground and its totally fenced and was somewhat skeptical about a cordless product. A lot of edging and trimming around fence, house, and driveway, flowerbeds, trees, gutter ditch, dog run, 4-car garage area. However this trimmer is so easy to use and it cut everything I wanted and still had battery power. I have used it four times since purchasing and it still has the original trimmer line in it. I can't believe it, so lightweight and since I am a woman its great. I hung it in garage and keep it plugged in all the time. When I am ready to use it, its ready to go. I am very happy with this product. Thanks Black & Decker for making such a useful and easy to use product.
Would I Buy It Again? I Already Did! [Posted on 2008-05-08] I owned my first one of these for EIGHT years before the battery finally started to weaken. Eight years for any battery operated product is fantastic. I liked it so much I made sure to buy another one and was very glad to see they haven't discontinued it.
Cordless, cordless, cordless, (with power)! I have a slightly larger than 'normal' yard and I get my trimming done in about 1/4 the time since there is no more uncoiling the cord, no more dragging the cord all around the yard and trees and bushes, no more dragging the cord from the front yard to the back yard, no more re-coiling the cord, etc, etc. (Oh yea... for the gas lovers... no gas to buy, no oil to buy, no mixing to do, no fouled spark plugs, no pulling and pulling and pulling to get it to work...)
In the eight years I owned my first one I have only had to replace the spool twice. That includes running it against some concrete, (but I don't beat it to death on concrete as one person here seems to do)
Auto-feed of the line works fine. Once in a while I have to let it spin up in order to cut off the newly expanded line but no problem.
The built in holder/charger is excellent. I can store it on the wall out of the way and charge it at the same time.
I can't comment about Black & Deckers customer support as I have NEVER needed it. :-) (well, except when I reordered a spool of thread, at which time they sent me twice what I ordered for the single spool price and said "Don't worry about it")
Weight? No problem for me personally and I'm not a beefy guy, I don't even notice it. The original one came with a shoulder strap and I quit using it after a couple times. The current one didn't come with a strap but it still has the loop on the unit to clip a strap to if really needed.
If you live on a farm or a vacant lot you might want something stronger, but if you have a regular house this will be a fantastic choice for you.
In eight years I've never had any reason to dislike this product and every reason to love it.
Great idea, Handy, but the battery is poor [Posted on 2008-05-31] I've had one of these models for about four years. It is very easy to use because it is not only cordless, but has the tap feature which is supposed to feed more string out if your string gets too short. It has some weight to it compared to a corded string trimmer, but it is not that bad.
This trimmer avoids the problems intrinsic to gas powered trimmers because it starts with the squeeze of a trigger. I was so happy to be rid of my gas trimmer, but soon I found a brand new problem. The battery doesn't last very long.
My yard is a typical suburban yard with a fenced back yard that is about 60' by 80'. It takes me about 15 to 25 minutes to trim my whole yard depending on the height of the grass. A few times this trimmer actually lasted through the entire job, but after one or two trimmings, I found the duration of the battery shorter and shorter. It got to the point where I had to recharge it in the middle of each job once. Then the next year it was twice.
No one stocks the batteries for this because they are built into a housing (quite a hassle). My first thought was that the battery was defective. I found that it was going to cost quite a bit to get the trimmer sent off to Black & Decker's service center and that a new batter would cost over $50 with shipping. I only paid about $80 for the whole unit. I ended up borrowing my Dad's trimmer, which was corded. So I guess I would recommend only getting cordless trimmers that have batteries that can be easily switched out or changed (like a battery with it's own durable housing). I cannot recommend this model, even though it works pretty well when fully charged.
Another little glitch on this unit is that the tap feature often jams up and then you have to stop and disassemble the string holder and figure out what jammed and fix it. That slows down the entire process of trimming. But honestly I have that problem with any string trimmer...gas, corded or cordless...so that is not an unusual negative for this model, but it is a fact you ought to bear in mind.
I like Black and Decker overall and found that my other products from them are usually just fine.
