You get what you pay for. [Posted on 2004-08-31] I bought the 18 volt Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and was initially pleased with the price and performance.
After approximately 14 months one of the batteries and the charger both failed. Now I am stuck with a drill, one battery and no way to charge it unless I buy a new charger. Even then, I still would have only one battery. I have learned that the gears in the drill are plastic and the stalling out I read about in other reviews is a common affliction.
Overall, it has not been a purchase that I am happy with, but when you shop price Vs quality you are at risk. My Dewalt 12 volt runs circles around the B&D 18 volt, so draw your own conclusions.
Don't Go Cheap! [Posted on 2004-09-12] The B & D 18v drill w/2batteries was a great buy. And, for over a year, it looked like a wise choice. But then came the problem with the charger -- or one of the batteries. Apparently, a bad battery will kill a charger. So, 2 ruined chargers and one dead (defective?) battery later, I am left with a drill, maybe 1 good battery, but no charger. I'm not taking a chance on another charger. It will likely die as the others -- and that's an answer way too expensive to a problem that probably won't go away. Now I'm doing what I should have done -- pony up a few more $'s for a quality product. And what remains of my B & D drill 'kit' goes to Ebay.
Not up to a real job [Posted on 2005-04-25] I have used this drill for over 6 months now and I can say that I hate it. Its clutch slips even when screwing into the softest of woods. I have seen a 12v cheap drill run circles around it in the most simple of jobs. I would tell anyone who would listen to go get a Dewalt. My Dewalt 18v can beat anything except for Dewalt's nicer models.
Great product [Posted on 2006-12-28] I have had this drill for maybe 4 years now. I love it. I am not sure what charger that people are referring to, the one that came with it was a dumn slow charger (black charger that slid onto battery) rather than the newer red fast chargers. While the charger that came with this drill was a very poor charger and did fail on me I simply bought one of the newer red chargers and have not had any problems with them at all. I am just an average home user (don't have a lot of construction jobs around the house) but the drill has certainly had a lot of time used behind it.
I just now purchased the 8 piece 18V tool combo at another retailer due to my satifaction with this drill. I now will have a new 18V drill and will hand this older one off to my wife. I certainly recommend Firestorm tools to anyone.
Best cordless drill I've owned [Posted on 2007-11-30] I have built many things in my home with this drill. I actually bought the kit with the 5 1/4 circular saw, drill, dustbuster type vaccuum, and light. With the small cordless circular saw and this drill I have built a wet bar, permanent sauana, dedicated home theater and much more! I have dropped this the drill many times while up on a ladder 6 feet from the ground. I have a few cracks on it, but it just keeps going. The best feature which I have yet to find replicated on any other drill is the quick connect feature. That is the best thing in the world to have on a drill. I put this drill to the test on my projects and have never been let down. I will be buying it again over any dewalt, bosch, or other overpriced item.
