Waste of time and money. [Posted on 2008-03-09] I purchased one of these useless grasshogs thru Amazon in May of 07. Bottom line - the "automatic" feed system isn't - it doesn't function. I complained, and they sent me replacement parts. I installed them. No improvement. Save your money - and grief.
BLack & DEcker GRass Hog Electric Trimmer/Edger [Posted on 2008-04-18] Consumer Reports gave this it highest rating and gave it a best buy rating. I can certainly see why. It is extremely easy to use and takes 3 seconds to convert from weed eater to edger. Automatically adjusts line as it wears. Very light weight so even a small woman can easily handle it.
The only negative is be sure the line is wound so it can freely be adjusted, otherwise it will not automatically adjust the line length as it wears.
Black & Decker String Trimmer problem! [Posted on 2008-05-04] Ths trimmer itself isn't bad for what it was designed to do, but there's a BIG PROBLEM trying to find replacement spools for the $#@$%^&%$#@! thing. Home Depot, where I bought the unit, never seems to bother to keep them on hand and of course when you try to describe the item, no one there seems to have the least idea where to look for them (or even if they have them). I've even tried the B&D on-line store and cannot find them there, either! This rather good weed cutting product is about as useless, without a source for obtaining replacement string spools, as a purebred race-horse stud that's been 'fixed'. My advice to anyone reading this is, next time you select a product from a company (no matter how 'great' it seems to be), ALWAYS first determine whether or not you will be able to obtain expendable supplies for it (i.e. replacement string spools) without having to suffer the agonies of the damned, as I have. [I wish I knew who the B&D CEO was....I'd take my useless string trimmer and put it into extended storage in a certain part of his nether anatomy!]
Cheers, another victimised 'consumer'
String feeder!! [Posted on 2008-05-08] I bought this product and used it twice then returned it. I was so excited about it because it swivels, its light, and it has great power for an electric trimmer. I got it home tore into my lawn and the spool jammed. I had to take it apart and refeed it. Then it jammed again. I took it apart again. Then is just kept feeding and I ran out of line.....one use. I gave it a second chance because I really like the other positives. I installed a new line and went to work....this time string just kept coming....and coming....and coming. I had 12inch pieces of neon green string all over my yard. Surprise....I ran out before I was finished. The next day I returned it. Oh yeah, I got wacked about 10 times when the string was flying everywhere.
Going to look elsewhere.......... [Posted on 2008-05-11] I have owned the Grass Hog XP since last year and I have one main complaint: when edging, there is not enough resistance in the line to cause it to feed. It just gets shorter and shorter unless you turn it over and engage the string with thick grass. The edging guide keeps it too far away from the ground for the line to come into contact. And when it does advance while edging, it throws the head around and diverts the cutting path, making it very difficult to cut straight. It is quite frustrating. My dad used it as well - somehow the button that allows the head to rotate from weeding to edging got stripped, it will not stay in the edging position solidly anymore. That could have been his fault: but the auto feed is not and leaves a lot to be desired.
