A decent screwdriver, but battery life a drawback [Posted on 2006-08-07]
The first time 15 years ago when I saw power screwdrivers, I laughed thinking, where would I use them. Well, 4 power screwdrivers later, I know now how handy they are. All have been black and decker. The first one just wore out, heavy use putting up siding (an original build in battery model). The second and third have just gotten old, with the internal battery not taking a solid charge anymore. Now this model has the Versapak feature allowing switching of the battery pack, the main reason I bought it. I must say that this is handy, being able to switch out the pack and get a fresh one. The power is fair, although cordless tools (drills etc) have changed dramatically since that first power screwdriver, and there are many more options available to use. One thing I have found it that the versapak battery does seem to go dead quicker than my other models, so I have to recharge the battery more often. And, as with many recargable batteries, these have a certain life, and one of mine just doesn't take a lasting charge anymore. But, again, good news is that you can buy packs easily, and off again to work I go. I feel bad that some people have had problems with this item, mine has held up well. I use it less than I use to, but when I do use it, it delivers the power I want. So give this item a shot.

God have mercy on buyers' souls [Posted on 2007-01-07]
Don't waste your money on this product--you can have a similar experience by using a free human turd to screw things in. Most bits fit so poorly that they are completely useless, and all bits will actually tear at the tips (after use with very weak screws!). The 'L' position is uncomfortable as it doesn't bend nearly enough. Also, the battery is a complete waste and began to die after only a few minutes of use (after a full charge). There isn't enough power in the first place to put a screw in more than halfway, even after first nailing a hole. I couldn't even hang a standard set of mini-blinds with this piece of garbage. Not worth the effort it takes to hit the "buy" button, much less the outrageous price.

Second time around [Posted on 2007-05-08]
My wife purchased this model used at a garage sale. The original silver (NiCad) battery was bad, and there was a clicking sound in the gearhead. Cosmetically, it was a mess. Obviously, it had been used long and hard. Replacing the gears with those from an earlier model made it "good as new". The VersaPak system, although often convenient, had a serious flaw: the NiCad battery pack. All B&D VersaPak tools should have the gold (NiMH) battery pack installed. These battery will make the difference between a good tool and a headache. The gold battery has more torque, longer charge life, longer useful life, and no memory problems. These batteries can be found on Amazon for a very reasonable price. The VP750 is a good tool, powerful, well constructed, comfortable, and easy to use. I have 5 power screwdrivers, and this is the one is my favorite.

Fine for a while... [Posted on 2007-05-19]
I used this screwdriver for a number of years to work on computers and do some light work around the house, which has gotten heavier lately due to multiple moves. It worked well for me, as the handle was comfortable to use in either position, despite moderate tendinitis in both hands.

Lately though, just after finally breaking down and getting new batteries for the unit (the silver kind, unfortunately, which apparently was the wrong choice) the rocker switch started going out. First it would stick a little, then a lot. In the end I pressed down on it and nothing happened at all. Feels like the switch gave out completely.

It only started giving me problems when I started using it for heavier tasks, with the requisite bumps and short drops associated with that. Much less abuse than I would expect to affect a powered screwdriver marketed as a good, general use tool.

In the end I am torn. I liked it while the unit worked, but its failure has made me suspicious. Still, I have the new batteries, so it seems like a waste to give up on the platform now.
(Unlike others I never had any problems with the batteries. They lasted a sufficient amount of time for use and multiple years.)

VersaPak = VersaJunk. The best thing this could be used for is a CLUB! [Posted on 2007-07-15]
It does work as screw driver, sorta. It's too long to get into a lot of places. The fold over handle doesn't go far enough. And not having a variable speed really sucks. I can get my cordless variable speed drill into just about any place this will go and some that it wont.
Don't try to use this to put slot head screws into finished wood. You will end up with gouges from it slipping off of the screw head because it sorta jump-starts when you press the button.
The poor quality batteries are a whole other issue since they seem to die and wont take a charge after just a few cycles through the charger, when you can get the charger to work. I now have 4 chargers. 3 double, only one of those still works on one side. And one single charger that quit working after just a few uses.
This has now joined the growing collection of "Things that don't work" that I have. Along with the VersaPak Scum Buster, and the VersaPak Drill.
