Could be better, especially from Bosch [Posted on 2008-04-23] Small, lightweight, powerful, smooth and easy to use for small trimming and routing jobs. I have used it to roundover edges, form edges, mortise hinges and lock templates, and cut slots in plywood. Plenty of guts to get the job done. However, no matter how tight I make the clamp, this router eventually loses the bit's height adjustment. While rounding over the edge on a tabletop, the first side is flawless. Then, as I proceed to the second and third sides, the baseplate moves upward and the bit leaves a small edge on the edge that has to be sanded smooth. Also, the stop that holds the motor shaft while I loosen or tighten the collet does not function properly. I actually have to exert considerable force with just one finger on the stop button to keep the shaft locked so that I can tighten or remove the nut that holds the bit in the collet. The wrench that Bosch supplies is an ill-fitting one as well.
This could have been better. Bosch stopped just short of getting it right in my opinion.
I rarely need my big router anymore [Posted on 2008-04-30] This is my second Bosch product and I must say I am hooked. This is one smooth, powerful, easily controlled router. The soft start feature is great. There might be a slight learning curve with the whole depth adjustment mechanism but it really seems to make sense. This is slowly becoming my "go to" router
Shaft-Lock button is horribly designed. [Posted on 2008-05-29] As others have said, the shaft-lock button is a major flaw to this otherwise perfect little tool. The flaw is such a pain that I really wanted to give it 3-stars, but everything else about the tool is so great, that I had to give it 4-stars.
When you push in the little red shaft-lock button, it catches on the aluminum motor housing, preventing you from fully engaging the button. Once you realize what is going on, you can work the button in such a way that it doesn't tilt to catch on the housing, but it isn't easy to do this. By the time I'm done fiddling with it to get it fully engaged, my thumb has lost the strength in it to hold it engaged against the strong spring until I get the wrench on. If the button comes out just a little bit, it will immediately catch on the housing again, and you are back to square one.
I usually just end up using a stick of wood to press the button in the end, propped against my belly to apply the force needed from my missing third hand. I really shouldn't have to do this. I'm just glad I don't have to use this tool on a daily basis.
Other than that one flaw, I can't think of a single thing wrong with this tool. Hopefully, Bosch is listening and will fix this flaw in the future models.
Very light for those jobs where you dont want a large router [Posted on 2008-06-07] Recently added this to my tool box. Sure is nice to have something you dont have to try to hold up or hang on to when you dont need all that bulk behind a smaller bit. This router enables you to have more control when routing because of it's size. It's great for laminate trimming and small inlay work. I should have gotten this a long time ago!
Two thumbs down. [Posted on 2008-07-22] No stars for this router. It has a funky adjusting mechanism to adjust the depth of the router bit. You release a lock, twist the housing to the unlock position, then move the base up or down, then twist the housing back to the lock positon, then engage the locking lever. I have a little over an hour of actual use and the adjusting system is beyond redemption. I turn on the router and the vibration causes the base to slip. I can't lock the router bit in place. The router is now useless.
