disasrer [Posted on 2007-07-14] I read all those 5-star reviews like it's about some other tool, really.
I got mine about a year ago. Laid around 800 sqf of solid 5/16 oak with it.
NOT A SINGLE PLANK WITHOUT A DEFECT. Absolutely terrible.
Only about 30% of shots are quite successful. About a half is where staple just gets barely sticked into the plank. those are easy to extract. Much worse if staple get jammed in the tool, you dont really see that, and it looks like a good shot on the plank. So with the next shot this tool will make a fancy knot from 2 or even 3 staples, screw the plank. Very often it fires two staples at onse, making nice knots again, very hard to get rid of.
During the year I tred several makes of staples, adjusted all possible things, but no good results still. I thought my tool is broken, so rented the same from small outlet. It worked no better. Yesterday I went to Home Depot to try renting from them. They said that tool worked SO PURELY that they do not rent it out anymore. They also said that most customers returned it without job done. Sort of relif for me :)
This tool was absolute disaster.
Why it /apparently/ worked for the others and not for me? Dunno. May be my solid oak planks just too hard.
I owned/used a number of other staplers, and this one gets 'the worst' prise by a huge margin.
so so good [Posted on 2007-10-01] Works most of the time, But Id say every 1 out of 5 staples didnt not come even close to sinking into the wood. We spent a lot of time with a hammer and a punch going back over each staple making sure it was flushed. very time consuming.
awsome [Posted on 2008-02-08] I own 2 of these runners and install thousands of feet of flooring, you can staple as fast as you can and it works like a champ, I highly recommend this runner
Better than Renting [Posted on 2008-03-27] Bought this to install 5/16" Oak Hardwood. Tool Rental place wanted $39 a day. Got this for $219 . Wasted a lot of time trouble shooting why it was only firing 4 staples before craping out. Thought the Stapler had a problem but turned out to be my old air hose. Switched out with a new one did the trick. After figuring out the adjustments and setting the right air pressure it worked very well.
I would recommend this to anyone and also suggest you buy the Bostitch staples too at the same time. They can be hard to find locally.
Excellent! [Posted on 2008-08-03] Worked perfectly right out of the box. Reading the reviews where folks had trouble I'd almost bet they were doing it wrong. This is an extremely light-weight stapler and until you master using it, it's easy to not have it pressed firmly onto the tongue of the plank or not have it at 90 degrees. Also the air pressure must be regulated at 80 pounds. Sure, I had some misfires but in probably every case it was my fault, not the gun's. Occasionaly I'd hit a screw in the subflooring and that would do it too.
The biggest improvement I'd suggest to Bostitch is that it stops firing when you're out of staples. The tiny window to view staples is not visible unless you stop and bend your head over to look at the side of the stapler. You can really fly with this thing and empty out a clip of staples before you know it.
Tip #1: Look at the staple window every time you pick the gun up to gauge how many staples you have left.
Tip #2: If you get down to only one or two staples visible, put in a new clip. You'll end up with lots of tiny partial-clips and every once in a while you can load all of those guys in.
Tip #3: Learn to slide the stapler down the plank so you can rapid fire. If you have to reposition it every shot you'll never get any speed up.
As others have suggested order the staples online and get more than you'll need. Only 1 of 3 local Home Depot's had them in stock and Lowes didn't carry them.
All in all, a great stapler.
