Does a lot more than trim laminate.... [Posted on 2008-03-29] I purchased this item to put rounded edges on some homemade benches from a local B&B. I knew that the size of the trimmer and the base options would let me reach the areas a normal router couldn't touch. Six hours later the benches were done, delivered and paid for. The client was ecstatic over the results and gave me another project to work on. I try to purchase tools that can be multi-functional, thus justifying the extra money for the offset and tilt bases. Sure enough I have a new client who wants a counter top cutoff within 3/4" of the wall, enter the offset base. I like the ergonomics of the Bosch trimmer better but couldn't justify the extra cost. I think some of the reviews I read on the DeWalt are a little harsh concerning base changeovers, I'm no rocket scientist and had no difficulty.
Good, but not perfect. [Posted on 2008-06-14] This router works good for what its for.
I have the same complaint most have, that the base isn't particularly precise. Well, thats stretching it. The base height adjuster is just plain chintzy. In fairness, it does seem to be fairly rugged, yet coarse.
Anyway, the router works perfectly for what I use it for which is:
1. routing jobs with small bits
2. small jobs that are just plain more simple with a small handheld unit.
3. routing out for door hardware. Works real nice for this job.
4. laminate trimming (ha, who would of guessed ;-)
I would not use this router if:
1. precise depth adjustment was necessary
2. larger bits would not be appropriate (if you need to be told that, go read a book before trying to use the tool!!!)
3. If i needed to adjust the speed of the bit to prevent burning etc..
Fit and finish is typical Dewalt quality, but that height adjuster is, well, unprescise.
Would I buy it again?
Without a doubt yes. The height adjustment weakness won't be a problem for me since thats what I use a router table for...
