DW705 with fixed laser , added from dw718 [Posted on 2006-07-03]
I love this little 12" saw, I outfitted it with the Dewalt laser for the DW718 that is not supose to fit any but the newest but it works great, bought the newer guard and fitted it to the old gaurd spring assembly plate and with just a flip of the switch from my little finger and laser is in sight, I built a deck yesterday for my father and it was supper bright out, very difficult to see the laser but when the stanley tape measure, it reflects the red laser and had no problems,,,just put the tape on the end I was keeping and lay it across under the saw and adjust the board to were the laser refected to the measurment, slide the tape forward out of the way and cut, keep the tape length out and set on the next board and on my way,,,,,NO pencil marks, NO T-square, SO MUCH FASTER :O)
Built my own 2x4 table for it with a couple of ply wood squares on each end and only added about 10 pounds to the weight, sets on 2 saw horses great, I can carry the table and saw by my self if i need to for sort distences and very easy for two people, If you read this ,,,Thank you :O)

Excellent saw for beginner or experienced user [Posted on 2006-07-18]
I purchased this saw several months ago from Amazon, and I couldn't be more pleased. I gave the saw only 4 stars because it doesn't have a laser guide, which I would have preferred. However, I purchased an Erwin laser guide ($20), and it works great on the DeWalt saw. Highly recommended, since it helps with precision cuts. I also bought a Ryobi miter saw stand ($99) which also makes the saw far easier to use. I built an octagonal picnic table which required a great many regular and angle cuts with treated wood, and the saw performed flawlessly. It has no problem making a 45-degree cut across a piece of 2x6 lumber. I'm amazed at how sharp the blade is...and stays. Very highly recommended piece of equipment.

This tool rocks! [Posted on 2007-05-26]
Very easy to use and handy. I love my Dewalt miter saw.

Awesome Compound Miter Saw for the money [Posted on 2007-08-29]
It's a great Compound Miter Saw.

Pros: The blade the comes with it will go through 4x4 treated lumber that is still wet like it's butter. With the right blade it does awesome work on the fine material w/ no chipping of the wood.

Cons: The Base extension is a bit crappy, it's always a bit lower than the saw deck. It's too short and the cheap wingnut to hold it in place leaves me grimacing.

The dust collector was a bit better than I expected, but it definitely doesn't collect 100% of the dust. I wouldn't expect it to do that w/o a vacuum, but the guide tends to do a good job of channeling the vast majority of it into the catch.

I'd suggest getting the dual pack of dewalt 12" miter saw blades that include the 32 tooth and 80 tooth carbide blades to go with this. It'll give you a back up to the included 32 tooth blade that comes with this, and the 80 tooth blade that is great for the fine work.

Mine's from 1992 and has lasted 15 years [Posted on 2007-11-10]
I have the original DW705, circa 1992 around when they first came out.
Looks to be unchanged other than the little support tube on the bottom.
I probably paid close to $500 in 1992 dollars.

The blade that came with it wasn't anything to write home about and
soon got replaced. Looks like the same now. Replacing it with a
good fine tooth Forrest or similar is a proper upgrade.

It's cut a little of everything, from hard tropical flooring, to 2x4s
for construction to crown molding, melamine shelves, MDF, and plastic
deck/trim pieces.
I can't count the number of times I lent it out for crown molding.
When this came out, it was the only 12" saw, and was able to cut all
but the largest profiles of molding. Haven't lent it out recently,
mainly because the last 10 borrowers of it have either bought one of
their own or one of the sliding models.

Pros:
--12" cuts almost anything
--at 40pounds, it was by far the lightest. maybe not so much in
comparison anymore. I still have a AMF Dewalt Radial saw that weighs
about 300 pounds. Though when the 10" came out, I was tempted to
swap for it just because it would cover 95% of what I needed.
--powerful motor. I caught my housemate chopping 8"-10" green hickory
and oak firewood with it.
--blade brake works well. neat blade guard works well and pivots out
of the way just as the blade comes down. watch the guys in Home Depot
playing with the demo models.
--well designed ergonomics, handles, and knobs.
--cuts smooth. very little blade vibration and runout.

Only cons I can think of (and these are very very minor)
1) they really should have spent an extra $1 and put rubber feet on it.
I originally bolted a piece of wood to the bottom, and just recently
bought the dewalt stand from someone. (well worth it)
2) a little more swing left and right would have been nice. 5deg even.
I've seen people try to hold work perpendicular to the fence trying to
cut an acute angle. (if you need to be told this is dangerous...)
3) dust collection port is plastic and sticks out. Mine's still intact
but many aren't. Dust collection is as good as can be expected in
a portable tool (not saying great)
4) the direct drive model of course CAN'T bevel both ways because of the
motor. This gets tricky trying to swing 16' long pieces of crown molding
around the typical California room.
5) for a portable tool that will be carried around a lot, it's got a
lot of rough edges and sharp points on the aluminum castings.

I can't figure out what the review is with the knob tightening and table
distortion. I've never noticed anything.
