EXCELLENT, USEABLE QUALITY [Posted on 2005-12-14] I've had this saw for about 2 years now. I wanted the DW708 Sliding miter saw, but $399 was more attractive than $599. For me, that was a good choice.
1) AMERICAN. I like to try and buy American first if possible. This one has more American content than most (The box said so, anyway).
2) RELIABLE. I use this thing all the time, and always has been excellent.
3) ACCURATE. Mine was aligned well, and I have not found anything that assembled improperly due to this saw's alignments. I have built several custom cabinets from Maple and Walnut, and all the joints I got from this saw were square and tight.
4) UTILITY. Functions great and easy to use. I wanted the 12" slide saw, but this already would make 95% of the cuts I need, and costs a lot less. It has a good-sized table, and the table is not two-thirds removed for the miter gauge, so it supports smaller pieces more completely as well as longer pieces.
I see that Hitachi has a digital readout saw now, but I'm not sure I would want that. More complexity than I would want. The only thing I wish this saw had from DeWalt was a laser guide.
Summary.
Mine has been excellent. I picked carefully from the above points and have not been disappointed. If you like to woodwork and have never used a compound miter saw, this will become your favorite tool quickly.
Wonderful [Posted on 2006-03-20] I recently purchased this saw at a discount from Lowe's. It is completely assembled and only needs the dust bag pushed in. Since I will use this saw in my woodshop, I will mount a dust hood behind it and a hose to the dust back connection. This saw has an amazing amount of torque. I love it that the motor is very quiet as compared to my old Delta. Granted the motor was mounted directly to the blade. I love this saw!!! Set up time is 30 seconds. The saw was set to perfection. Fit and finish was wonderful. Only one gripe. The knob on the back was very hard to pull out the first time and once pulled out it was okay. I don't like the way the knob is made at all.
I love the saw and I hope the new models perform just as well. I won't know. I intend on this saw lasting me many years.
a bargain and good quality [Posted on 2007-03-01] I got this saw cheap at a hardware store opening. After tuning it up, it cuts perfect 90 and 45 degree miters. Smooth cuts with the factory blade if you let it get up to speed and cut slowly. My only gripe is the lack of a safety switch - I wrote "Unplug me!" in big black letters on the handle. You'd get more use out of the sliding version, but that costs $200 more.
A much used addition to my shop [Posted on 2008-01-04] I've had this for close to two years and I use it constantly. It's solid and accurate. And it's US made and that matters to me. It's easy to adjust and it stays where I set it. I've used a lot as a miter saw cutting angles. In fact I used it a lot that way this past weekend. I also use it a lot for easy cuts of long boards when precision is not necessarily an issue, just a handy way to cut off long boards. It will cut off 2 X 8 in one pass but this past weekend I used it to accurately cut 2 X 12's by making the cut and flipping it over to finish the cut. It will cut up to 4' thick. That's handy to stack boards and cut them all at the same time so I know the lengths are all identical. This is the advantage of paying a bit more for a 12" saw. I wound up using the saw a lot more than I anticipated when I bought it and I'm still using the 12" carbide tipped blade that came with it. It is fairly heavy. It's portable but it is a handful and a bit awkard to carry by the nature of the profile of it (and any other such saw). I'm happy with the saw and got it from Amazon.com at a very good price.
Great saw; worth the money! [Posted on 2008-02-17] I bought this saw about a year ago when I was looking to install crown molding in my living areas. I have been extremely happy with the purchase! This saw is a work horse/powerhouse! It is accurate down to the ½ degree.
I have been doing home improvement for years and have never had a tool go beyond my expectations. This saw was worth every penny of my hard earned money. I read articles about miter saws and finally purchased based on the reviews I had read. I can tell you; the reviews are accurate! I find myself looking for reasons to use it. I also recommend the crown stops if you are planning on installing crown molding.
I consider myself a `value' shopper and always thought Dewalt was over priced. I was WRONG, enjoy this workhorse; it's a great tool!!!
