Defective Clutch [Posted on 2002-07-08]
I too have found a defect in this product's design. The clutch does not work in the low (high torque) speed. This is the speed you most need the clutch. Other than that a nice product. For the price it should work as advertised!

very good drill/driver, but ... [Posted on 2002-09-08]
I've just purchased my DW980 from Sears. I also noticed the problem with clutch on low gear on the display unit, but the actual unit that I purchased (which I examined prior to the purchase) is flawless. I guess Dewalt has inconsistent quality control, or it could simply that the display unit is defactive, or Dewalt might have fixed the problem on the later production runs. Who knows!?

update to my previous review [Posted on 2002-09-19]
After using the DW980 for almost two weeks, I've formed a pretty good impression about it:
1. In my previous review (9/07/02), I stated that the clutch worked fine in the lowest gear (gear # 1). Well, the truth is that it only works in torgue settings 1-5. The worst thing is Dewalt won't admit the problem, I was told it was normal.
2. Occasionally, the gears don't shift (it got stuck in the middle). I have to run the motor a bit to complete the shifting.
3. When stopping in gears #2 & 3, it makes rattling sound.
4. The high speed is really helpful, it finishes the jobs much cleaner.

Great torque and speed for any job [Posted on 2002-10-23]
I bought this drill for projects around the house, and it has risen to every challenge. Lots of torque for driving screws into oak. Plenty of speed when used as a grinding wheel. The battery lasts very long.

I haven't had any of the listed problems with the clutch either.

I think it's a great value that will last

Not a bad product, but not heavy duty. [Posted on 2006-02-25]
I bought the DW980 as I did not want to spend too much money. I then realized that it was not powerful enough for what I wanted to do and returned it. The 'Heavy Duty' in the product name misled me I guess. I suggest that you try it out first. I bought a 18V set and I am happy now. Drawback: it is a lot heavier to lug around.
