Solid tool with a few quirks [Posted on 2000-09-08] My wife just bought this saw for me, and it is definitely a beefy heavy-duty saw. It seems to do a very nice job of cutting miters. The table insert was cracked when I got it, but Delta shipped out a replacement overnight to me without any hassles. I did have to do a bit of trial and error adjusting to get the miter saw perfectly aligned, and it doesn't have a nice system for micro-adjusting the alignment--it's just trial and error. When you do get it aligned, though, it seems to stay aligned and cut miters well. Also, the extension arms that come with it are completely weenie-like--very unDelta.
Solid, but did not last [Posted on 2001-03-01] This saw is really not portable (which was fine), cut and power was great. The supplied accessories were also nice. I had purchased mine to use on a new addition, the motor went just out of warranty (due to surgery I hadn't used it for more than a year during the warranty period). Delta was unresponsive to emails, letters, and appathetic on phone calls. Repair cost exceeded that of a replacement, and I couldn't replace it with the same (didn't feel it would last). Very much supprised me how sort the life was on it, the 8 1/4 Delta I have has been going for more than 12 years (and actually had to pick up the slack for this one).
I've punished my saw severely but it's still holding up. [Posted on 2001-04-20] I have been using my Delta 36-220 to cut 3/4 steel rod, 3/4 x 3/4 steel stock and up to 3/4 x 3" steel plates. I installed a metal cutting blade and let the sparks fly. I've melted the plastic insert, melted holes in the dust bag, and popped 20 amp breakers when an "old" blade gets jammed in the stock. I've made hundreds of cuts and the saw just keeps on working. When I switch back to a wood cutting blade, it cuts just as smooth as when the saw was new. I returned the first unit I bought because the round table rocked in the housing, but the replacment saw was nice and tight and keeps on doing everything I've asked of it.
Short Life Span [Posted on 2001-09-16] I too got a little over one year of use from my Delta 36-220. It experienced a complete motor failure. Repair cost was greater than the cost of a new identical one. The saw worked very well up to it's failure. I would not purchase another Delta Miter Saw!
Blade guard is poor design [Posted on 2004-02-15] The saw cuts well and has plenty of power. The sticking arm on the blade guard broke the plastic attachment point. I've noticed that this is the only model I've seen from Delta that has a plastic attachment point for the blade guard arm. Will keep you in shape moving it around.
