Finally a real saw [Posted on 2007-01-09] My old saw was a Sears 10 inch contractor which is adequate for most 1 inch material but above that is was pretty weak. Also spending time setting the fence on both ends was a pain. The new Delta was easy to set up and accurate right out of the box. The fence is a bit mickey mouse but when locked down is pretty accurate. Lots of power and smooth running.
Should have been better [Posted on 2007-02-13] As has been written about Unisaws, the blade that comes with it is sub-par and should be omited. The throat plate also needs to be rethought. Some set up can be tricky, in particular the guard/splitter vertical aligment. Run out of the arbor was < .002in and the table top was very well aligned to the blade. It would have been nice if a 3/8 allen wrench was included for table top alignment.
The fence boxes arrived like they had been kicked all the way. The saw itself, on a wooden pallet looked good, although the "tipped" indicator on the crating had been tripped. The screws for the reticle on the fence head had been nocked out and a washer was missing. The fence rail had one of its plastic end caps broken. Note that the product is shipped in at least 5 boxes by truck. You will have to move all the items yourself as only curb-side service is provided.
The extension table top was not flat, but is usable. The screw and bolt attachment system make it difficult to force it into shape. The carriage bolts used to attach the L-brackets for the table were junk and the treads failed when I tightened them down. Fortunately the BORG had similar replacements for only 9 cents each, and they didn't strip.
If you are going have a mobile base that supports the table board check the leg placements carefully. Putting the supports in the logical corners of the board didn't place them inside the Delta base that I bought that was supposed to be for this saw exactly. I'd recommend C-clamping them in place temporarily, getting the table attached and then screwing in the legs.
The internal angled shelf that is welded on the inside of the cabinet for dust direction has some pretty big gaps at the edges. Some aluminum tape fixed that, but if you don't you'll get more dust under the machine than you really should. The saw cabinet rubles some when the saw starts up, but quiets down after that. It could be because I have it all on a mobile base rather than bolted to the floor.
The Unifence is OK, is not really dead-flat. It looks like it is extruded and the faces are not milled. You get a .001 or so "bump" at the top and bottom: I didn't have that on the Bessy-knock-off I had installed on my contractors saw. I did really like the way the fence is aligned using the plastic nuts to get it parallel and vertical. The storage location for the wrenches and miter guage in the plastic motor cover are a good idea. I also like the utility of the wrenches for working on the splitter/guard and for use in aligning the fence, but the "closed end" parts of them are tight fits on some of the bolts since they are just flat stamped steel.
The assembly and adjustment manuals need updating as there have been some product changes and they could use some better illustrations. The instructions for the table board installation were in both the "adapter bar" and the main saw manual. Neither were really that good.
I would have really loved to be able to give it this a "good" or "great" rating, but the little flaws and the time it took me to get it all tuned really detracted from its rating. As one of the premier manufactures Delta products should be better that this.
