What happened to Dremel? [Posted on 2007-07-10] I've had a Dremel for more than 10 years. It has served me faithfully and gotten me out of more binds than I can remember. I've cut steel, wood, plastic, you name it.
When my Dremel went missing after relocating, I went and bought the nicest Dremel I could find, the 400 XPR. Even has a cool name! I took it home and began my first project, using the cutting disc to cut off some 1/4" thick aluminum. After just 15 minutes, the unit began to get hot (I am familiar with the cooling vents and accustomed to keeping my fingers away from them). I let it cool off and started back to work. It didn't seem to have as much torque and got even hotter in just 10 minutes. I let it sit for an hour and came back and this time it only ran for a few minutes before it just stopped.
Unbelievable. I waited a few minutes and turned it back on and it just ran for a second and then stopped and that was it.
I am so disappointed with this product, I can't even begin to describe it. Particularly since the model I bought in the early 90's served me so well for so long. How could Dremel release a product like this? And it seems as if I am not the only one with this problem. I am looking for another rotary.
But check exact kit on Dremel site before ordering! [Posted on 2007-08-04] I almost ordered this then remembered when I looked at these at the store there are TONS of kits Dremel puts out and the store had them mis-labeled with wrong photos, so I double-checked this against Dremel site. This kit 400 3/55 does NOT have the flex shaft as pictured. Go to Dremel site first and look at all the 400-series kits to make sure you are ordering the one you want. (BTW, the 400 refers to the rotary tool, the 3 refers to # of major attachments--and not all "3" kits are the same 3--the 55 refers to the # of "accessories"--little tiny things like bits and even separate counts of sand-paper bands.) Added later: The 400 3/51 is the one with the flex-shaft (plus circle cutter, lawn/garden sharpener). This one (3/55) has cutting guide, circle cutter, and lawn/garden sharpener. Unfortunately, amazon doesn't seem to offer the 3/51.
Do not buy! [Posted on 2007-12-06] Bought the dremel 400 xrp and had the exact same experience as the other reviewer. Got hot with normal use, and lost power and then finaly stopped all together. Got a replacement from dremel, and the same thing happened!!! Unbelievable!
A great deal!!!!! [Posted on 2008-03-31] I have only had this item a week but for the money the tool and its attachments are a good deal. The tool works great and can be very precise given the person using it practices. I use it on inlaying wood. I only paid 60 bucks what a deal!

it does get hot after a while but i found i can still
