NO MORE HONDAS!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!! [Posted on 2008-07-13] I had a Honda powered Craftsman gas mower that ran real good for all of 40 hours until the intake valve froze, (I'm a mechanic and maintained it better than recommended), after buying one of these earthwise electeric mowers I'll never even think about another gas mower! Not because of any "eco" reasons, I'm just sick and tired of gas powered "throw-aways", if ya can't believe in a Honda, what can ya believe in? This mower slides through 8 inch tall grass like a hot knife through butter! I don't use the grass catcher so can't comment on that, and have only had it for 2 weeks now so can't comment on the longevity, but so far I can highly recommend one of these to anyone who's sick and tired of pullin rope and changin plugs! The cord is no hassle in copmparison either. I have 3 houses all with small yards and this machine is easy to haul and so far I'm VERY happy with it! I highly recommend this unit!
Do you have doubts about an "electric" lawn mower? [Posted on 2008-07-19] Maybe you think it's no more than a kitchen appliance with delusions of grandeur. Well, electricity is not just for kitchen appliances and vacuum cleaners anymore ... I was tired of repeated trips to the repair shop with my gas mower, so I kicked it to the curb. Literally. I don't need a Cadillac mower for my Mini-Cooper lawn. In addition to the ease of plug in, turn on, and go ...
What I like:
- Light weight. Light enough to manuever with one hand while the other hand tends the cord on turns. ALSO, this holds easily going across an incline, rather than up, which is hard on the lower back, or down, which is hazardous.
- Height adjustment is spring-loaded, and counter-balanced just right. Raising and lowering cutting height is quick and easy. It lowers in a snap from preferred lawn cutting height to its lowest setting for grass or leaves on the drive or street, which quickly turn to near dust for ease of blow-off.
- It mulches great across the lawn; much, much better than the last 2 gas mowers I've owned. That's probably more due to design than power source -- but the mulching is the point. The clippings from one week's growth just disappear. And the St. Augustine grass common here in Florida doesn't mulch as easily as the bluegrass of Kentucky, as memory serves.
- A metal cutting deck, rather than the plastic offerings from a couple of competitors.
I can't speak to how well the bag works; haven't tried it. Bagging is a waste of time, effort, and fertilizer, imho ...
Drawbacks:
- uhhh ... It doesn't make enough noise to wake the neighbors. (Long story ...)
The padding on the handle is not durable. Not at all. But I see some padded bicycle handlebar tape in its future.
Nice [Posted on 2008-07-19] I was skeptical about this as I had never even laid eyes on an electric mower before. Long story short the cord was not a problem and I got used to it very quick. It was powerful and cut through dense St. Augustine grass. I have not tried the bagger so I don't have any opinion on that. I am 6ft4 and usually am uncomfortable with mowers but the handle adjusted to me perfectly. It rolled very smoothly and adjusts height with a single lever.
Earthwise 50020 works for me [Posted on 2008-07-22] My 15 years old electric MTD suddenly stopped working. So I decided to purchase another. I compared the quality and price. However, Earthwise 50020 came out to be the winner. I like adjusting the height using one lever only. I had to do it one wheel at a time in my old MTD. The sucking power is the same as my old MTD, so I can't complain. I also like the metal body. Unlike some others made from plastics. I always cut the grass when it is dry. Yes, I would recommend this lawn mower.
Dangerous structure [Posted on 2008-08-25] First the deck after only 8 mowings showed signs of flaking and rust formation. Then at 13 mowings (three months) the cushioned handle is breaking down -- chipping, tearing, etc. And, most significantly is a death trap -- the rear rubber guard attached to deck is tearing off from its feeble attachment. Watch out -- the pieces of shrappnel may hit you and your loved ones (glass can be repaired).
And no one is willing to accept immediate responsibility for the structural failure neither the manufacturer nor the selling agent.
My advice: Stay clear of buying this mower and even the company may be suspect.
