This is a very good router [Posted on 2005-03-18] I debated between this router and the comparable Bosch model for a while before finally choosing the DeWalt. Three things sold me on this router: the depth adjustment ring, the easy motor removal, and the power.
After using it in my router table I can say that all three of those features are absolutely top notch. I really like the depth adjustment ring - this makes changing bit height in my router table VERY easy and precise (no more spinning the motor housing). The easy motor removal is a plus too - all you do is release the motor lock (one handed I might add) and then squeeze the quick release tabs on each side of the motor housing to cause the motor to slide right out of the base. Thats it - it could not be simpler.
As for power, I have not tried to spin any huge bits in this thing, but I have used some serious ogee bits in white oak, poplar, and pine. In every case, the motor handled the cuts in one pass without bogging down at all and the cuts were super smooth and burn free (I use Freud bits). In my experience, the electronic variable speed works very well.
Re-Conditoned or what ?? [Posted on 2005-08-15] This item was advertised as reconditioned but it was simply used. Or maybe I should say, pre-owned. The base was way scratched, the body was way dirty, and the only thing that made me feel good, is that it came in the original box.
One more good one. [Posted on 2006-09-17] Scott's review is right on in every respect so rather than re-hash old info I'll only add one thing. The only thing I didn't like was the short motor shaft retaining pin. You really have to push *very* firmly in order to get enough pin protrusion into the hole to prevent rotation while loosening or tightening the collet nut. Just a quarter inch more pin would prevent you from having to press your finger into the casting that captures the pin. This is really not a gripe about. Just an observation. I'm considering a second one so that it can live on the table. You won't be sorry with this unit.
Not reconditioned at all--- [Posted on 2007-01-18] I just received my DW618R. Was planning on using it this weekend. It arrived loose in a Dewalt labeled box. I tested it immediately and the speed control did not work at all. Looked at the knob and it was obviously busted. The router was quite dirty and the centering tool was missing the shaft. It sure appears that Dewalts recon facility - in Mexico - just put it in a box and shipped it with no recon AT ALL. Would not recommend Dewalt reconned products at this time. Will see how Amazon handles this - not Amazon's fault.
