Hard working tool [Posted on 2008-04-10] After looking at all the reviews on this product, some negative, others positive, I looked at the record of the company and knew that they make a quality product. I received the product and started using it right away. I have another lopper of another cheap brand, which is a piece of junk, but this lopper is great. I have had to use some muscles that were out of shape from winter, but the ability to cut branches 1 1/2" are a piece of cake. They work wonderfully. The geared head keeps the lopper steady as it easily cuts through the wood. It is a strong, well made tool that I anticipate using for a long time to come. I have come to the conclusion that you really do get what you pay for. If you want a tool that will last and do the job it is supposed to do, the cost will soon be forgotten, especially with the ease of its use. It is an awesome tool!
A good value, May not be the toughest tool though. [Posted on 2008-05-20] These loppers work real well and perform as described. I was a little disappointed that they don't appear as tough as some others I have seen. The cutters and gears are stamped out of one piece and the handles don't appear to be attached that well. All that said they haven't broken yet and they are easy to use. The gear design makes it so you have to have pretty long arms to get the blades to open the full width. If you can get them on the branch though it's coming down no question about it.
90 degree lopper [Posted on 2008-06-02] The lopper works great at cutting easily and quickly, but I have a bad back and I have to bend over and put the lopper parallel to the ground in order to cut brush off close to the ground and not leave a pointed stake. Why don't they make a lopper with the cutting edge at a 90 degree angle from the handles so the user could remain upright yet make a smooth cut close the the ground?
Excellent Loppers [Posted on 2008-07-06] These loppers cut cleanly and are easy to use. Would definitely buy them again.
PowerGear feature makes pruning trees extremely difficult [Posted on 2008-07-13] The PowerGear feature is this product's achilles heel, which can make cutting larger branches (say 1-inch or more) very difficult or impossible. PowerGear works by using a reduction gear near the blade. This means you have to open the handles much, much wider than other loppers. For example, to cut a 2-inch branch the handles need to be opened literally 180 degrees apart, i.e. all the way open. This means pruning a branch that is in close proximity to other branches (the usual case) just isn't going to happen. I will say the price is good and the blade seems very sharp and durable. In my experience however, this simply is not a tool for serious pruning. At this point I will have to buy a traditional loopper to maintain the trees in my yard.
