Careful!! Cheap where you don't want it!! [Posted on 2007-03-26] Well, I finally got a chance to use the new GMC Router in my Bosch table. I must say that I was impressed with the accessories and the features, but the results were SCARY! I mounted a large 1/2" router bit and set the speed to the lowest setting. Then I turned it on, and watched in horror as the bit changed heights while it was spinning! Up and down! In 25 years, I have never seen this on a router. I shut it down and re-mounted the bit, tightening it in the collet as much as I could. The wrench is also cheezy, and flexed until it spun off the nut. I tried again with the same results. It's as if the bearings that hold the shaft are loose inside. I removed it from the router table to remove the bit, and could not find the button that locks the shaft. It had fallen off under the table. I later found out that the cheap magnesium alloy part cracked on the first tightening of the bit. I'm not sure at this point what possible use I can make of this router. I am very dissappointed and frankly afraid to use it. I hope this is just a bad router and that others have better results.
Stay away if you are serious about your tools [Posted on 2007-09-22] I purchased this router set mostly due to budget considerations and relatively positive reviews of other Amazon users. I did not expect much from all the bases and options, as I intended to mount it on a router table. The fixed base has no through holes (even after removing the plate) making it a difficult task to mount it to the table (it has metric threads). After attaching the router, putting a brand new, industrial quality rail and style bit in and turning the router on, I noticed a significant level of vibration of the table. You really had to push the table against the wall or it would gallop across the entire shop. After close examination of the router I noticed a significant wobble of the bit. The bit spins perfectly flat in my Porter Cable Router. In addition, after a few days the router has developed a extremely loud shriek that offends people across the street even in an industrial area.
Overall, this router is useless and is yet another proof that when it comes to tools you get what you pay for. I made a mistake and hope you won't after reading my review.
Works well for quick jobs, bad for extended use [Posted on 2007-10-11] Bought this product with low expectations and low $. My expectation were not exceeded... This product does do as specified, it routes, however, the plunge base doesn't retain depth settings very well, haven't used the other bases yet. Also, the motor would lock up on me if I used the router for more than 3 minutes. On one occassion I had to remove the brushes and unplug the device for 15 minutes for it to restart. However, for quick jobs or people just staring out with little $, this router is ok.
good product [Posted on 2007-11-11] I would recommend this router, for the money I think it's an an excellent purchase. I am using it in a router table and have only rounded over 200 linear feet of oak but so far have no complaints. It has plenty of power for that application.
Bought router, can't get warranty service [Posted on 2007-12-23] I bought the Router kit in August 2007. Broke the 1/4" collet first time used. Contacted Amazon, unable to replace the broken part and since I had the router more than a month, return for replacement was unavailable, they eventually offered to allow a return but I would be deducted for return shipment and the original "Free Super Shipping". My final return would be less than 40% of the original price, forget that I'll use it for a boat anchor first.
Also contacted GMC directly in Australia, they don't have parts for the GMC USA products as they are shipped directly from China, they said to contact Amazon for the warranty. Apparently the One Year warranty in non-existant. Also, I bought one of the GMC Sabre Saws earlier in the year, now it too is broke as the Toolless blade holder cracked into pieces. Looks like I now have a second boat anchor.
It is sad that Amazon sells a product and can't get the manufacturer to stand behind their written warranties.
I have bought several items from Amazon but will not do business with them in the future, they just don't stand behind the products they sell nor do they insure their suppliers honor their commitments
