excellent tool [Posted on 2007-07-15] good quality sturdy tool has been handy many times. only negative is heavy on your belt you know that it is their. great tool for some one that need heavey duty tools
Great! [Posted on 2007-07-20] I've had multi-tools for years, I keep up grading. This is the best so far. I really like the big size that's more comfortable for my big hands. I use this tool many times a day, every day on the job.
HUGE tool. [Posted on 2007-08-11] This is not your average sized Gerber tool. It is about 30-40% larger than any other I have ever seen (won't fit in most pockets). It is advertised as a one hand opening tool. For the most part, that is correct. The pliers and main blades are easily opened with one hand, but the smaller tools and large screwdriver will require two hands to open. The pliers are very large, but come to a tiny point so they don't function well as needle-nose because they're too big and they don't work well as regular pliers because the grip area is tiny. I think the folks over at Gerber are onto something with this tool, but one might wait to see what comes out next before settling on this tool.
Big and Strong but not Everything You Need [Posted on 2007-09-30] The Gerber Freehand is supposed to be the biggest multi-tool ever made. I must admit that I purchased mine to fulfill my own curiosity, rather than for a real need. I own the Leatherman Surge, their largest multi-tool, and will focus my review of the Freehand on a comparison with that tool. The Freehand is larger than the Surge (both in length when closed and weight), however, the Surge offers more tools. Both offer large locking knife blades that are accessed without opening up the pliers. The Leathern has smoother locks. The Freehand has good blades too, though I must admit that the serrated knife with a rounded tip is not immediately useful to me. The Freehand has NO tools inside the the inner part of the plier handles. In order to keep their one handed opening feather, Gerber seems to have been unable to make room for more tools. There are two big knives, scissors, a fold out ruler that ends in an "industrial driver" and five TINY additional tools. The tiny tools include bottle cap opener, can opener, three screw drivers and a lanyard ring. The one-handed opening feature is good, though I haven't had a chance to prove the pliers yet. I would recommend this tool as a gift or an additional multi-tool for the multi-tool lover; however, I doubt that anyone will want this as his only tool.

Form Over Fuction [Posted on 2008-05-05] I think that Gerber just wanted to get as many tools as possible into one Multi-plier. I bought mine to replace an older model Multi-plier that I dropped in the river. I was disappointed. There is too much stuff. The can opener is not functional and the Phillips head screwdriver has been cut in half in order to add more stuff.
If you just want to play "mine is bigger than yours", than this is the one for you. If you plan on using it for something other than display, you should consider an older model.
