Great Saw for the money [Posted on 2004-09-21]
Having used a 3HP and 5 HP Delta Unisaw, I have to say that there is no notable difference between the Delta and Grizzly other than the price, you definitely get more for your money with Grizzly.
When I unpacked the wooden crate, my particular saw had some shipping damage even though the crate was in tact. The rear cast iron trunnion bracket was cracked in two pieces. It was disappointing to see since I wanted to use the saw the weekend I picked it up and could not. I contacted Grizzly and they had the parts I needed shipped out the next day. They are very good with the customer service and the expenses were covered in full. Bottom line is, shipping damage could happen to any saw, there are no guarantees.
After I replaced the damaged part and cleaned off the cosmoline, the saw was very easy to set up and align. The large cast iron table top with extension wings is large enough that I have yet to require a particle board extension table between the fence rails.
With the 5 HP motor a top of the line 12" blade, wood does not have a chance, the saw does not slow down. Overall, the saw has delivered everything that I expected.
Get a mobile base unless you plan on never moving the saw because it is heavy. You do not need more than a 8" Dado blade or else you will need to make a new throat plate (bigger blade will hit the iron plate if you raise the blade up to full height), I can't imagine any project requiring a dado deeper than and 1".
The fence is a Biesemeyer knock-off and not the rail is not as beefy as the Biesemeyer but it does work fine. It is very easy to adjust for parallel and square.
