really does the job - pro quality [Posted on 2006-07-04] Amazing how well it cuts and I can cut the exact size hole from under 2 inches to 12 inches in size. There have been two problems with cutting holes, getting the right size hole saw, and not getting hurt when the hole saw gets stuck and the drill starts to spin around the other direction with me still holding on. With this hole cutter I have cut hole up to 12 inches in diameter in wood with my old ½ drill and feel safe doing it.
I like the dust shield that catches all the shavings. It makes cleanup a breeze even when cutting holes in the ceiling. I put in recessed ceiling lights all through my house and this cutter made the job quick and easy. I did not need to make a template, just decide where the can was going and center the hole cutter and cut. The cut plug is held by the dust shield and all I needed to do was flip it over and drop the plug into a 5 gallon bucket I tied to the ladder. With the slots in the shield it is very strong and it makes it easy to watch as it is cutting. There is no cross brace needed for this composite plastic dust shield so it is much faster to wipe clean when done.
The blades are very fast to change and the HSS blades cut very cleanly and the tungsten carbide blades last a long time.
well made - does the job better than expected [Posted on 2006-07-22] I have researched quite a bit on adjustable hole cutters and saw a wide range of prices. The Hole Pro X-200 is in the middle in terms of pricing but I took a chance and am glad I did. It is much better made than my friend's single blade hole cutter and it works twice as fast. Making large holes is actually fun with this tool.
Very clean hole edge so most of the time I do not even bother to sand the edges with wood. Works very well in sheetrock and even fiber cement board for exterior siding. I like not having to trace a circle and then try to make a cut with a jigsaw while the shavings are going into my eyes, ears, and mouth.
Very well made and the case is also nice with slots for the tools and the extra blades that ship with the hole cutter. The clear plastic dust shield is obviously a tough plastic and it holds the ball bering support for the hole cutter without a bracket which makes cleanup a breeze.
I liked it so much I bought the larger model for my brother as a birthday gift. He is planning to put in a home theater system with ceiling speakers and this tool will make it a lot faster.
Hole Pro is well built [Posted on 2007-01-10] I bought the hole pro X200 to cut holes in my bathroom walls, ceiling and floor, the holes were for lights and plumbing fixtures. It is a good sturdy tool, it works well in a 1/2 or 3/8 inch power drill. It is good for making rough holes, with an accuracy of lets say.. to the 1/16 of an inch if you're careful, maybe to the 1/8 inch otherwise...it isn't extremely precise. The shield is a must when drilling into ceilings! It catches the debris that normally hits you in the face, good for remodel jobs, when you can't make a big mess on the floor, of course the shield doesn't catch all debris when drilling horizontal or downwards, but the shield keeps shavings and dust from flying all over the floor. The drill cuts neatly thru 1/2 inch drywall for roughing out 6 inch recessed lighting. It cut a 5 and 9/16 hole very neatly into an acrylic shower panel(swanstone, corian etc..not fiberglass), and it managed to get thru about 7/8 inch of plywood flooring.I do not recommend that anyone attempt cutting any wood thicker than 5/8 inch, the saw isn't strong enuf. I would say it is a good tool for the avid DIYer to own, It is a real time saver....and money saver, if you consider that a 4 or 6inch bi-metal hole saw costs around 40 dollars.
I would recommend it to a friend...but wouldn't loan it to them...I like the tool.
Expensive but worked great [Posted on 2007-10-03] The kit came the day I needed it. It worked great! I was installing retrofit canned lighting and what used to make a mess using a hand saw, now took less time with no mess. Great tool and case. A "bit" expensive though, pun intended.
