Arrived damaged, of course [Posted on 2008-04-27] I knew when I ordered this item there was a strong possibility that the fan would arrive bent. Boy was I right. The problem is that the steel for the hub for the cage is too thin to handle rough shipping.
I don't see how with their current design they could put packing around the cage.
The box was not damaged, so the shipping could not have been too rough.
Anyway, since I KNEW it would arrive damaged, I was prepared to do a little tuning when it arrived.
This is what to do:
1) Remove from packaging, save some of the styrofoam.
2) Lay the filter on a flat surface, like a workbench.
3) Put a piece of packing on top of the filter.
4) Take all the guts out of it in 1 piece. You will have to remove everything out the hole for the filters. Do not cut wires, just remove the screws for the control panel. Save the screws in a coffee cup or something, since they like to roll away and hide.
5) Carefully lay the guts on the packaging, so you don't scratch the paint.
6) Look through the rectangular opening for the fan exhaust. You should see the squirrel cage fan. Spin the fan. Watch it wobble!
7) Get a large flat-tipped screwdriver. Rotate the fan so that the clearance between the bottom of the fan and the fan case is the smallest.
8) Here is the delicate part. Carefully insert the screwdriver between the fan, and fan case and lift the handle of the screwdriver upward gently. You just want to bend the fan hub back to true.
9) Repeat steps 7 and 8 until the wobble is gone.
10) Reinstall the guts. The hardest part is getting the fan back in. Use a piece of packing that you saved to hold the fan case level so you can get those screws in. You can use a small Phillips screwdriver to do the final alignment.
Using the above technique I was able to balance my fan to the point where I can balance a nickel on it with the fan on 'high'. After about 1/2 hour of tuning, it's a great fan. The remote works well and it really moves and filters the air.
If you are not willing to tune your fan, I would not buy it. However, I must admit, I enjoyed the process. I have a well-tuned fan, not because it came that way, but because I did it.
value for money spent [Posted on 2008-05-22] I like this air filtration system. It performs well, is not overly noisey, the remote is very convienient, and being able to set it to run and then turn off automatically after you leave the shop is very nice. It accepts readily available sized furnace filters, so that is easy on your wallet. My only complaint is that Jet doesn't pack the units very well for shipping. The first I ordered was damaged so badly the fan wouldn't turn. Return and replacement was quick and easy, thanks Amazon! The second unit was bent again, but worked ok so I kept it. As the units are constructed of quality materials, I believe the damage was done with a fork lift, I don't think the UPS driver could do that much damage. I would heartily recommend this AFS in spite of the packaging issue, it is great value for your money.
Disposable filters the same size don't fit [Posted on 2008-06-07] I bought this unit partly because I saw that I could purchase disposable filters at the local store the same size as Jet says they are 1x12x24. Well jet's filter is actually a half inch smaller in each direction as a normal filter is. In other words a standard filter of the same size doesn't fit. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point, probably will fabricate a transition frame to hold the"bigger" standard size. Jet wants $15 for their filter and the local store wants $4 for the standard size. I take this unit to job sites to help keep the customers house cleaner.
Terrible QC on the fan [Posted on 2008-06-07] Another example of fine Chinese craftsmanship. The impeller on the fan was not perpendicular to the fan motor shaft; therefore, the thing vibrated like crazy due to the wobble. I ended up taking the entire assembly apart and truing the impeller myself, which took most of the vibration and excess noise out the unit. It sure seems like there should be better quality control, it makes me wonder how high the quality of the components are that I can't see. I imagine it will do an adequate job of filtering the dust in my shop though.
Jet AFS-1000B [Posted on 2008-07-07] Only 4 stars due to the vibration from the squirrel cage. Not as bad as some have reported and pretty much goes away on medium and high. It does a good job filtering.
