Poor Product Support [Posted on 2005-05-04]
I'm afraid I have to agree with one of the other posts regarding poor warranty service. I purchased a the left tilt saw (along with an 18" bandsaw and dust collector) in November of 2004 and for almost 2 of the last 5 months it has been inoperable. Initially I phoned tech support to report that the motor stopped and they speculated that it was a problem with the start capacitor. They sent a new one and I installed it but the motor still did not work. At their instruction I did some diassembly and determined that the windings of the motor were charred black so they said they would send me a new motor, however it wouldn't be available for more then a month. I phoned back the following day and asked if they could send a motor from a display model, new or used. The fellow I spoke to said he would "see what he could do" and call me back that day. He never called. When the motor finally became available I was assured that it would be shipped by 3 day air since it had been so long. It wasn't shipped as promised. I called only to find it out that it went by standard ground transportation. When it arrived I opened the box only to find that the 60+ pound motor had about a 1/2 of an inch of packing underneath it and consequently the fan housing was smashed into the fan and the mounting plate was bent. Futhermore they sent the wrong motor. I have a left tilt saw; they sent a right tilt motor, even though I provided the model number and the original motor tag (along with a special form they required). I phoned again, spoke to the same person and was told she would overnight a new motor. It's been 5 days and I'm still waiting. Obviously I'm a bit frustrated at this point hence the reason for my first ever product review. It may well be that the product is as good as any other companies but in reality it is only as good as the company that stands behind it and right now they're not very impressive. If you're going to be relying on this saw for your business I would recommend looking into another brand.

Great Workshop Addition [Posted on 2005-06-27]
I purchased this saw 2 years ago as a replacement for an older contractors saw. After looking at several saws, I decided on the Jet (altough I did consider getting the 5hp version of this machine).

Set-up was around 3-hours including putting it on a mobile base. Other than normal table top cleaning and vacuming, this saw requires very little maintenance. The fit and finish are nice, and there is almost no vibration. The fence is well constructed and works great. I built an outfeed table for under $25 instead of purchasing an aftermarket table for $150. I have moved the saw twice since I purchased it, and it is still in excellent condition!!!

PROS:

1) Rips 8/4 cherry like butter with a good blade;
2) FLAT table top;
3) Easy to lower/raise and angle the blade;
4) No vibration;
5) Easy access to the motor and belt

CONS:

1) I use a 1100cfm dust collector, maybe I need more juice since I have to clean out the cabinet after each use
2) Blade changing is a little cumbersome, you have to secure the blade with a scrap peice of wood;
3) Blade guard removal is also a little cumbersome, you have to losen three bolts (one is under the table insert).

ALL in all, a great machine, it rips and crosscuts great hardwoods great, runs quieter than my older craftsman contractors saw, and is a heavy duty workhorse. For the money, I can't see spending $2,000+ for a Powermatic 66.

Great Saw / Poor Motor [Posted on 2006-01-29]
I bought my saw in March 2003. It has not had heavy usage. I think the overall quality of the saw is good (flat table, fence in line out of the crate, vibration practically non-existant, large handwheels, good fit and finish and good power).

The motor is the exception to the quality. It is cheaply made and failed in the middle of a project. I replaced the start capacitor (it had overheated and was leaking oil) and upon startup, the motor lost rpm, stopped and completely blew out the replacement start capacitor. The motor is out of warranty and I found out the windings were charred and shorted out. Needs a new motor. Found out that there were no gaskets on the motor end caps or anywhere else that I could find allowing sawdust to penetrate the motor (so much for TEFC). This can lead to premature failure but I don't know if that was the direct cause of my motors failure. I didn't expect it to last forever but 2 1/2 years of light use shouldn't cause failure. I have other machines that are 30 to 40 years old that have had much more extensive use and the motors are still good.

I will not be buying my replacement motor from Jet!

One other mild complaint... the dust collection box could be better designed to channel the sawdust down to the collection port. It just stacks up inside the cabinet and needs perodic cleaning. A minor inconvenience.

Would give it five stars if not for the poor motor quality.

It's a dream [Posted on 2006-03-10]
I replaced a 15 year old Craftsman contractors saw that I had tweaked and adjusted until I thought it was as good as it could be. I had replaced the belt with a link belt, the pulleys with a set a friend had machined, and added the trunnion adjuster from In-Line Industries. I was satisfied with the results until...

The delivery of my new Jet was prompt and courteous. The trucking company scheduled delivery for 1:oo pm, and I was called by the driver 3 times before the delivery to update me on the schedule. There was no charge for a lift gate, he backed the truck up my drive, put the box on a palette jack a placed in the garage exactly where I wanted it.

Unpacking was uneventful. My son and I slid the saw off of the plate and onto the Jet mobile base. From that point, it took about an hour and a half to finish the assembly. Everything lined up and the fit and finish was perfect. Included inside the base was a spec sheet showing run out, blade alignment to miter slot, RPM and max height. All of these were far better than the accepted range.

I then thru on a Freud combo blade and did so test cuts. Like the preverbal hot knife thru butter. Didn't have a nickle in my pocket to test vibration, so I used a dime instead. Balanced it, and then cut a piece of 4/4 oak without knocking it over.

I have since been building shop cabinets with 3/4 melamine. The 50 inch fence is great for those large, heavy sheets.

This is the third Jet tool I have purchased. Additionally I have the 6 inch jointer and a 16 inch band saw. While these machines are not Powermatic and Laguna, they still have the best quality for the dollar available today.

junk motors [Posted on 2006-04-03]
the motor is junk. less than three years with light use, two run capacitors it funally quit working. no other motor fits. Ok I will buy one from jet what other choice do I have. The next problem is a new motor is 6 weeks on back order. Must be going through a lot of them. I cant wait to much business will be lost. so i took the leeson motor off my planer made an adapter plate at the local welding shop and reamed the pulley to fit the leeson motor. LASTJET TOOL I OR ANY ONE I KNOW WILL EVER BUY
