Now try finding a can to fit it! [Posted on 2007-08-20]
This may work as advertised, but try finding a 30 gallon galvanized trash can these days. I've been searching Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and I've been online for an hour. I found one place selling cans, but they're on the other side of the country and only sell them in-store. Everybody now carries the Rubbermaid 32 gallon cans, and this lid won't fit those. Also, I've heard rubber cans buckle from the vacuum. I may never get the chance to find out if this works or not.

You can find a can that fits... [Posted on 2007-10-16]
I got this separator for my Jet DC-1100. First let me say that it doesn't look exactly like the picture. The holes look more like Lee Valley's 'Veritas' lid. The intake into the dust collector is dead center while the intake into the can is on a drastic angle to form a "cyclone" effect. Mine was $41 from Amazon with free shipping...I see it's $28 from some other vendors now. I think it's really worth about $28 in materials. It's worth more than $41 in value. I looked at the other lids that are basically a 90 deg. PVC elbow imbedded in the lid. This one is a lot more aerodynamic. It is a large lid. The largest diameter can it fits is about 23.5-24.5", while there is a second internal ring that fits cans around 21.25-22.25". Even the 30 gallon galvanized steel trash cans I found are closer to 20.5". I did find that Rubermaid Brute 44 galon trash cans are a perfect size (although I haven't tested their implosion resistance so I can't say anything about that). And with horse country all around me, my local Tractor Supply has very thick (nearly 1/2") plastic feed barrels that are 24" diameter, tall and very durable. About $20-25 will get you a nice can. That's what I chose. I figured it'd be quieter than steel anyway. Back to the lid...it's got a foam gasket that has qualities of memory foam (slow to bounce back but shape conforming). I have high quality ( a.k.a. expensive) 4" clear flexible tubing and it does "screw" into the holes. It could be a little more snug in my opinion. I will probably rig something to make the fit a little more air tight. All-in-all I would still buy this again...or the Veritas because there's not much else out there without dropin some $$$ on a real cyclone. If you have a dust collector and can't fit or afford a cyclone this is a relatively cheap upgrade.

Works Great! [Posted on 2008-01-24]
I just bought the Delta 50-760 1 1/2 hp Dust Collector. I bought this hood to use as a pre-seperator, obviously. Afer reading these reviews, I went looking for the Rubbermaid Brute 44 Gal trash can. I found it cheapest at Home Depot for $39 although Lowes also had it for a little more. I bought at HP. Setting the Jet Hood on the Brute the fist time gave me concerns, as it just sits loosely on top of the can. I decided to go ahead and try it out after setting up the DC.

After setting up my Dust Collector when it arrived, and connecting the 4" flex tubes to the Jet Hood, I was very impressed with the tight fit of the lid on the 44 gal Brute after turning the DC on for the first time. With the DC running, I could actually lift the trash can (along with the weight of the attached hoses) by lifting up on the hood. I judge this to be tight enough and have found no air leaks through subsequent use.

The Delta flex hose that was packed with the DC screwed tightly into the outlet hole of the Jet Hood, no other fitting/adaptor needed. I also bought the Delta collection of various fittings, hose, clamps etc. The hose in that kit (which appeared to be the same brand as that which shipped with my DC) screwed tightly into the inlet hole on the Jet Hood, also with no other fitting needed.

I have used this setup for the last two days and it works great! I am very happy with the use of this hood on the 44 gal Brute trash can. Very Highly recommended!

Although I haven't tried it yet, for those interested, it looks like this hood, with the Brute, would work as a useful preseperator with a large shop vac with 2 1/2 hoses using the appropriate adapters. My old method of dust collection was to hook up my 16 gal shop vac to the 2 1/2 ports on my jointer and planer. I was constantly emptying the vac and cleaning the filter. Filter cleaning on the shop vac was even more frequent when taking just light cuts with these machines. A seperator would have made that setup more efficient.

I have used my 2 1/2 vac hoses and attachments on my new DC with adaptors for fitting them to the end of the 4" inlet hose of the hood. I had to use a 2 1/2" hose which had 2 male ends (which I already had - bought it at Home Depot many years ago) because of the type of 4" to 2 1/2" adaptor I had on hand, but it works fine and lets me use the Dust Collector as a vacumn. Other 4" adaptors probably would let you use the regular shop vac hose. Although more expensive to run, the DC has some advantages. Better filtering of the returning air is the most important one for me which is why I bought it! The shop vac just sent the small dust right back out into the air through the exit/blower port. The DC doesn't do this when using a 1 micon bag. Another is less powerful suction (but more effective). Using my shop vac, I was always sucking up something I didn't want "sucked up", which meant I had to totally clear off shevels, workbenches etc when "dusting them" and/or the stuff on them. Also the adaptor would frequently get stuck tight to whatever I was cleaning - very aggravating! Using the shop vac attachments on the Dust Collector solved both of these problems and allowed me to quickly dust off the many layers of sanding dust etc in my very cluttered 2 car sized shop without having to empty the shelves, nor the stuff on benches. Using mostly the brush attachment for the shop vac, I was able to remove most of the dust in a couple of hours. I was able to effectively dust surprisingly fragile and delicate items! My shop vac would have destroyed them in a heart beat! Anyway, enough of this, you get the picture! The Jet Hood works very well as a pre-separator on the 44 gal Brute!

Works as Advertised [Posted on 2008-05-05]
I bought this dust collection hood when I got my Delta 50-760 dust collector. I am using it on a Rubbermaid Brute 44 gallon trash can that I purchased at Home Depot for about $40. This can is a perfect fit for the hood and is heavy duty, so it doesn't collapse under the suction of the dust collector. I haven't done any jointing or planing since I got it, but have used it for quite a bit of cutting on my tablesaw, including some 1/2" wide dado cuts which produce a lot of sawdust. So far the performance has been great and I have no sawdust in the plastic bag of the dust collector, so it is all in the trash can. It's not a true cyclone but it seems to keep the heavy stuff out of the impeller of the dust collector which is a good thing. By the way, the item is not the same as the picture. The inlet goes in radially near the outside of the lid, and the outlet comes straight up out of the center of the lid. This probably works better than the setup pictured.

Works great, Especially with this specialty trash can !!! [Posted on 2008-05-25]
This does do the job, and makes emptying those dust collector bags less of a hassle.

Those of you looking for a trash can to use with this system, TRY LOOKING AT SEARS FOR THIS: "Craftsman 30 Gallon Collapsible Drum" IT IS DESIGNED FOR USE ESPECIALLY WITH THESE SYSTEMS AND IS COMPACT AND GREAT QUALITY!!

Just noted many were noting problems finding a good solution for the cans to use, and this one is tailor made with some sleek features.
