LCD Failure - 3 months later [Posted on 2007-07-29] I too am victim of the LCD failure. I have had the unit since for 2 months. Easy to program, worked great however the LCD unit no longer works.
LCD Display Failure - DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT [Posted on 2007-08-29] Looks like this is a common thread / problem with the Nelson 5945 Hose Timer. Setup and installation was a snap, and it did it's job reliably. One month after installation in June of 2007 (I too live in Texas - temps in the high 90's), I needed to add 5 minutes to the watering time. The SCREEN WAS BLANK!! Couldn't see a darn thing. Batteries checked OK - full power. Unit still functioned - valve opened and closed correctly.
.
NO WAY TO CHANGE ANY OF THE SETTINGS !!!!
.
Design of this unit's display is obviously faulty. Save your $$$ and get something else. I should have done my homework and reviewed the on-line comments before buying this timer.

Very good timer. [Posted on 2007-09-07] Very good timer for the price. I had an older nelson timer that stopped working. I called the company, and they told me that my timer was no longer being made, but they would send me a new one that was an upgrade. They sent me this one.
Recently, I've been looking for an additional timer. I'm on my 4th one from Melnor and I'm taking it back and getting this one from Amazon. The other timers just plain didn't work, or didn't have the features that this one does.
One of the features I like the most is the manual on/off. When you push the button the motor opens the valve and starts the flow. Then the timer displays 3 hours (that's when it will shut back off if you do nothing). You can adjust this down to 15 min. None of the other timers had this feature.
Programing can be tricky at first, but once you get it, it's a breeze.
One note: Both outlets are NOT programable. One is a manual on off outlet.
L.R.Nelson 5945 LCD failures [Posted on 2007-09-07] I just (Sep. 7, 2007) spoke with someone at the L.R.Nelson customer service line. (Their web-site, at www.lrnelson.com, lists two support numbers, one just for the electronic timer devices). The tech I spoke to sighed deeply and said, they know of the problem but haven't found a solution to it yet.
For the time being, though, if you mail them your receipt for the problem timer, if it failed with a dead LCD, they'll send you a new unit.
Temporary approach, because the problem MAY be caused by exposure to sunlight (the tech said), is to keep the unit's display covered over. She suggested using black electricians' tape, but I suspect that a cardboard or foil flap would do as well and not be a problem to remove. I'm buying one anyway -- and keeping the receipt until the warranty runs out.
What a junk product! [Posted on 2008-04-22] 1- The display is almost unreadable - in direct sun or shade.
2- The bypass valve delivers about 25% of what it should.
3- Although I could ALMOST program it, I couldn't. . . and I have built my last 6 computers from parts.
Junk, pure and simple.
