Very handy pocket tool [Posted on 2005-08-22] Leatherman's reputation is pretty well-established in the pocket/belt tool market. I wanted something small that I could carry in my pocket and attach a key or two to as well. The Leatherman Micra fits the bill well.
The particular one I have has the blue polycarbonate handle cladding. I chose it to minimize the inevitable scratching of the handles in my pocket.
The tools themself are a little less quick to access than my old Victorinox pen-knife tools were, but the number and quality of the available tools certainly make it a worthwhile trade.
I also find that the location of the key fob and the key & LED light I have attached can be somewhat inconvenient when using the tools with the handles folded as they are intended to be used.
Overall, however, I'm very pleased with the functionality of this tool. I started using it almost immediately after purchase and find myself turning to it several times a week.
If you need a small, capable, well-crafted pocket tool for moderate use, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one.
Micra vs Squirt [Posted on 2006-11-08] I used both the Micra and the Squirt. Right now I have the Squirt attached to my keys for about 3 years and it is still going strong. I have the "S4" version with the scissors instead of pliers. When I saw that someone said the Micra was a better value, I had to come to the defense of the Squirt. Take it from someone who knows, the Squirt far surpasses the value of the Micra. I had gone through 2 Micras before I found the Squirt.
--Scissors Spring--
Micra - After a month or two it was so gummed up that the scissors would stay shut and would not open on their own. This was the main reason I went through them so fast.
Squirt - Still springing after years, much more force behind this one.
--Scissors Grip--
Micra - When doing some serious cutting (or using the pliers), the sharp metal frame and tools will start to slice into your hand.
Squirt - Thicker frame to house the tools on the outside lessens so it will not hurt your hand.
--Paint--
Micra - Start to flake and chip off after a month or so. (If you had to get one, get the stainless steel finish)
Squirt - Storm gray paint has scratched off but no big flakes like the Micra. The paint is bound to go through some serious wear and tear when on a keychain so some scratches are to be expected.
--Size--
Micra - Small
Squirt - Smaller
If you were thinking of getting the Micra, spend the extra 5 bucks and get a knife that is 5 times better.
Solid, good price [Posted on 2007-07-13] Overall, I would rate this a 4 star. Built well, low price. You do have to open the Leatherman to use all the tools.
The superior pocket tool [Posted on 2008-06-07] Having a few bucks to waste, I thought I might prepare myself for dire straits. I considered the classic Swiss Army knife, but couldn't find what I wanted--the models that had a bottle opener were far too large to be slid in a pocket and carried about. I then considered the Leatherman Micra, which I believe to be the better option.
First, consider this: how often do you need a pocket knife? Second, consider this: how often do you need a pair of scissors? In my experience, decent scissors are thrice as useful as a knife blade. While Swiss Army knives have at best a slide-out pair of nail scissors, the Leatherman's scissors are comfortable, powerful, and precise--shrinkwrapped CDs and DVDs are, for the first time in my life, no problem. The knife blade is certainly up to snuff, if not quite what you'd want for gutting a trout. The tweezers are superb, the nail file reliable, and even the screwdrivers (flat and Phillips-head) will do in a pinch.
It may not have every feature known to man, but then I've never found myself saying "Darn, where's a reamer when you need one?" (Frankly, pocket-sized corkscrews never were much use, anyway.) For eight out of ten problems around the house, the Leatherman Micra will have you covered.
