Functional and cool! [Posted on 2007-08-23] This knife/utility tool not only looks great, it also carries the Letterman's quality and functionality. It is great for easy fixings in the house and at work. Highly recommend.
Nice but not 5 stars [Posted on 2008-02-09] A great leatherman product. A couple of issues though, first the knife is both wide and heavy. It is not a in anyway shape or form a pocket knife, if you want it on your person you must use the sheath. Second the carabiner clip is a bit useless, it would cripple you if it was banging away on a belt loops and it would be difficult to remove from anything. Last the can opener stuck and I could not get it to open with using something to pry it up. On the positive side the drive system is great! The blade is thick sturdy and sharp.
Not a multi-tool, but a good knife with a good bit driver setup [Posted on 2008-06-18] What's came in my package
1 knife (with 3 double ended bits, 1 ready to use, 2 stored in the handle)
1 nylon sheath
1 bit holder with 7 bonus double ended bits, stows in the sheath
First off, the knife is big - unsightly bulge in your pockets big. Not a pocket knife by any stretch of the imagination.
The knife blade is sharp. It opens easily with the thumb stud. It locks securely. It feels good in your hand. The rubberized handle gives you a non-slip grip.
The carabiner clip is cleverly integrated into the handle. However, it feels a little "flimsy" compared to the rest of the functions. I can't see using it regularly.
The can opener looks like a standard can opener. In this era of pull-top cans, I'm not sure that this function is critical.
Finally, the thing that differentiates this knife from the others - the bit driver. The bit driver folds out and aligns with the long axis of the knife. This makes it very comfortable to use and also resolves may clearance issues that you encounter trying to use bit drivers on other tools that are oriented perpendicular to the handle. The size of the handle helps you generate a fair amount of torque as well.
Bonus feature - the bits can be used in the Leatherman Skeletool multi-tools as well.
Bottom line - it won't replace my Skeletool CX for everyday pocket carry, but I will add it to the equipment in my daypack, replacing a swiss army knife.
