little powerhouse [Posted on 2005-09-24] Do not let the modest 10.5 amp power rating or this saws lightweight of 7.7 pounds disuade you- this saw means business.
I like the lightweight and the low noise of just 84 decibels as they make this saw a pleasure to use for long periods. The only thing I will not use this saw for is concrete- my craftsman has to be good for something
Best circular saw ever [Posted on 2006-02-02] The light weight makes handling this saw in awkward positions much easier and safer. 10.5 amps is plenty . This saw is a workhorse . Good pro saw
Great Saw [Posted on 2007-05-23] Excellent Saw. Light weight, very easy to handle, quiet and powerful. Incredible how easy it goes through 2x4's and 2x6's. Wish the case was not plastic but I guess most saws come that way these days. Other then that, I highly recommend it.
Good lightweight. [Posted on 2007-08-24] Only use occasionally for light weight projects and it performs well, mainly bought for its weight.
One sweet little saw! [Posted on 2008-03-05] I've owned this saw for about a year... in that time it's built a staircase, a monster of a desk, installed laminate flooring, two subwoofer boxes, and a table among other things. The light weight really makes the 5740 helpful on those long extended reach cuts. My dad actually owns the same saw, before the Makita he had a cheap-o skilsaw and I had an ANCIENT (1960's?) Craftsman. The difference in using this saw and either of those is akin to using a scalpel for surgery - or a machete. I shudder thinking about using those old saws in comparison.
Notice that in addition to the light weight, this saw is only generating 10.5 amps, this is a readily noticeable trade off to a heavier, noisier saw. I use this saw with a 40t freud avanti blade on MDF, plywood, etc for precision stuff. It cuts 2X lumber no problem, but it's not really a framing saw.
If you use a circular saw only occasionally, or are looking for something for trim work, pick one of these up, a good 40t blade, and a straightedge. It's a great saw at a really good price.
