Best cordless tool ! [Posted on 2003-01-11]
Lightweight, small, tons of power, great batteries. Bought this tool 6 months ago, and drove thousands of screws and have yet to strip a head of a single screw! Been on jobs with other guys with regular guns cordless and electric that striped the head with the screw half way in and were reaching for the vise-grips, this gun could back the screw out! Very loud but worth the noise. You still need a second drill for regular drilling but I have always carried two drills, one for drilling pilot holes and the other for driving screws, time is money. Fits into small spaces, great for hanging cabinets. Great tool for installing hinges on doors and bucks with those soft brass screws that seem to always strip. Drives tapcons no problem, before I always had to break out the elecric screwgun. Don't be afraid of only the 12 volts you have plenty of power and those 18 and 24 volt guns weigh alot more. Just buy it, worth every penny.

Wish I had one sooner [Posted on 2003-08-12]
Wow, does this tool drive screws and everything else. It sank 3/8" lag bolts with ease. Made my deck building easier. Drives 3" #10 deck screws into hard, wet, treated, yellow pine with ease as well. The best part is, the driver doesn't strip the phillips or square drive out of head of the screw like my Dewalt corded screwdriver does, and I haven't broken one screw yet! It is not as fast as the screwdriver but it is a sure shot each time. The only downside is that it gets noisy when the impact starts in. I wouldn't trade this for any other tool.

HOLY COWWW! [Posted on 2004-07-31]
...all this time I've been patting myself on the back for moving up from crappy Chinese-made Ryobi and mediocre DeWalt and Porter Cable cordless drills to my 14.4v Makita 6223 cordless drill a year ago---until a friend of mine who builds movie sets for a living turned me onto this gorgeous little thing!

I install blinds and shades for a living, which means easily 200-400 screws a day, mostly drywall and the occasional metal too. While the Makita 6223 was already a huge improvement over my previous drills due to its flawless precision, reliaiblity, balance and ergonomics, it still required a good bit of muscle especially when up against harder woods and metal plates.

At about half the weight and 2/3 of the size, this Makita impact driver however makes the job almost exertion-less...just point, pull the trigger, and watch that screw fly effortlessly into place in a fraction of the time and with a fraction of the force! I can now go twice as fast with maybe one third of the sweat! Sure it's a little louder than the cordless drill but who cares, I'd sacrifice that for the speed and ease any day of the week.

That said, I will probably take mine back and upgrade to the 14.4 volt Makita 6933, which has 1150 inch/lbs of torque maximum compared to this one's 887...only because of occasional installs I have in offices with steel-framed windows.

If you're only drilling into wood or drywall or thin aluminum though, this 12v model will be more than plenty. It's made the job so light and easy even my wife uses it sometimes around the house!

For info and specs, go to the www.makita.com website, Amazon's listings are very undetailed.

A Must for Hardwood Decks [Posted on 2004-08-11]
Using Ipe for a deck? As you know Ipe is 5x more dense than redwood and a real pain to screw down. Yes, I have broken plenty of screws heads by using a conventional driver/drill. And its nearly impossible to extract the broken screws out of wood that is as hard as Ipe. Thus I purchase the Makita Impact Driver/Drill. I can't believe I did half the deck without the Makita 6914DWBE. Although Ipe still needs to be "predrilled", the deck screws screwed down with ease and I never broke a screw head again. Saved me hours and hours of time and frustration. Amazing!

Sometimes you just get lucky! I sure did on this one.... [Posted on 2004-11-16]
I have to admit that the only reason I got the Makita 6914DWBE Kit is because it came as a rebate offer when I bought another Makita tool.

Didn't know what I'd use this darned Impact driver thing for and I actually attached a letter to my rebate certificate asking Makita to send me a different drill kit. Am I glad they ignored my letter. After I received the tool I started reading the reviews here on Amazon. Man are those reviews right on the money and am I ever glad I did the research. I now use two drills- 1 for drilling holes, and the 6914DWBE for driving the screws. If I only need one tool, I'll leave the drill on the workbench.

You will be impressed with the quality, lightness, versatility and power of this impact driver. You'll stop breaking off and stripping out screw heads even on the smallest screws. Uncanny how well it works across all different sizes. Your bicep will thank you for giving it a break (but, you'll develop less muscle). You will complete your work more efficiently, faster and more productively.

When this one wears out, I'll replace the brushes or buy a new one. I don't want to be without this impact driver in my toolbox.
