Great little tiller [Posted on 2008-04-25] I love this tiller. It is easy to use, fairly lightweight and quite powerful. I have a 20' x 30' garden and I had the whole thing tilled and ready for planting in an hour. Much better than the Sears tiller I use to have!
More Fragile than Advertised; Pain to Assemble [Posted on 2008-04-28] First, it was not that easy to assemble - access to various parts while assembly is difficult. After some hard work assembling (needed 2 people), we used the product on fairly loose soil with grass. It kept on entangling in the grass, requiring manual clean-up of tines every 2-3 feet. So the advice would be to actually clean and mow the grass as much as you can before tilling - kind of odd as you would want a tiller to be able to till over ordinary grass lawn. Anyway, the machine circuit breaker would go out every so often, either because of grass or a small rock, requiring resetting/manual checks and cleaning. After about 6 feet by 6 feet tilling (it works well if the land is clear and there is no grass and rocks), the unit's circuit breaker gave out on the very first day, not to recover from any resetting.
Called customer service - they were not the most helpful at first, asking us a thousand questions, putting us on hold, then the phone line getting cut off and so on. Finally, after talking to a manger (who was actually helpful) returned product for repairs (going through painful disassembly), and got the it back (they did not charge us anything for repairs so that is nice). We haven't had the courage to assemble it yet - and have worked on our garden manually - disappointing for first-time gardeners.
Best advice - check other competitive products - if you do get this one,
1. use it early so you can find out any problems (you may return it through Amazon, if needed - thankfully Amazon has excellent return policies, but we were too late in opening so could not return the defective product)
2. clean out the area of any entangling grass or vines/rocks etc. and then start tilling. Grass has to be removed manually from the tines so it is better to clean the land yourself manually if you can.
Love the litlle 'tiller! [Posted on 2008-04-29] Works really well, really quiet. Seemed to have plenty of power in pretty dense, compacted soil. Have a lot of golf ball sized landscape stones scattered through the garden from the previous homeowner which got caught in the tines repeatedly and tripped the breaker right away. I found this action more acceptable than the tiller laboring and stripping out its drive. Just knocked out the stone, reset the breaker, and got back at it. A great buy which will save my back constantly!
An Excellent Purchase [Posted on 2008-05-02] This tiller far exceeds my expectations. When it arrived I assembled it in about an hour, though if I had watched the DVD first it would have gone faster. As another reviewer has reported, the kick stand presents some difficulty but is not insurmountable. The tiller cuts through the hard Georgia clay in my back yard more easily than any "grown up" tillers I have used in the past. To get the greatest benefit of the powerful motor I use a 12 gauge cord, actually two 50 foot cords, connected, for the more distant locations and a single 50 foot cord for closer spaces. I rate it five stars.
Mantis electric tiller [Posted on 2008-05-12] Mantis 120-Volt Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand #7250-15-02
This tiller exceeded my expectations. It has all the capabilities of a gas tiller I had previously, without the maintenance hassles. I have used it constantly this spring with no problems, and I love the instant starting. I will add the weed detanglers next year for sure. I would like to see them as part of the basic package as is the kickstand--a nice addition. I would recommend this to any gardener.
