Bumpy Backs [Posted on 2000-01-11] The first step in preparing a chisel for use is flattening the back. Most of the chisels in the set of blue chips I purchased were very difficult to flatten. Concavity is not a problem. It is convexity that is vexing. Unfortunately, these chisels were very convex. I am still trying to flatten the one inch size. I should have sent the bumpy ones back for replacements or refund. I wonder what ever happened to quality control.
Great Utility Chisels [Posted on 2000-03-16] I have a Marples 1 1/4 inch chisel. The back didn't take too long to flatten, considering the width (it was slightly convex). The edge does blunt more quickly than my set of expensive chisels, so I don't use it to chop dovetails in hard or abrasive wood. It does a nice job as a utlity chisel - cleaning up glue joints, light trimming, etc., so I don't have to use my good chisels for those jobs. It's long blade is a big advantage over hardware store chisels. I'm about to buy a set.
Buy the 4 piece set! [Posted on 2001-01-02] These chisels are great for what they are and offer an excellent value (price vs. quality). I have not noticed a significant concavity / convexity on the backs of the 2 chisels I've had for the past several years (1" & 3/4"). They do seem to need sharpening with a great deal of regularity but it's easy to get a nice edge in no time (probably as one reviewer suggested, due to the comparitive softness). Very nice heft and comfortable to work with for extended periods of time. Don't hit these hard with a metal hammer and then expect them to be comfortable when doing hand cleanout because I've found the plastic does deform somewhat. I guess that's why I'm buying a new 4 piece set.
Have served me well [Posted on 2001-10-23] I bought a set of these chisels about 10 years ago. With a proper shapening, they have served me as well as I could expect. The hold an edge, they don't chip, and they do what they are supposed to
These are not your Grandmother's Marples! [Posted on 2005-03-10] Marples was an English brand that was purchased by Irwin. I have an older set of Marples chisels and they are quite nice. Based on the comments of other posters the quality may have dropped. It would be nice to know exactly where they were made as it is likely they have been cheapened.
