high expectations-moderate performance [Posted on 2008-05-08] To my surprise, shipping and delivery were quick, but I did have some trouble with assembly, instructions weren't useful. Biggest complaint is that it is truly designed for small branches and doesn't clear itself while in use. Frequently have to shut off and remove cover to clear mulch that built up inside. After thought is that price is too high for what it can accomplish.
McCulloch 15 Amp chipper/shredder MCS 2003 [Posted on 2008-06-08] I have only used the chipper once, but it seemed to work very well, especially on small twigs & limbs.
The assembly instructions were very poor. It is very quiet in operation and easy to use. Aside from the poor assembly instructions, one criticism I have is that the 2 openings to feed leaves, grass, limbs,
etc. are small. Therefore, if you have a lot of material to mulch, the process is fairly slow. One other negative-
the nuts mounted inside the feed chute are not fixed in place. When you try to put the screws in from the
outside, the nuts fall out. You can't reach up into the chute from below, so I just got some larger wood screws
and put in only two, one on each side instead of four.
Bad Bad Bad [Posted on 2008-06-09] I waited patiently for this chipper to arrive. It came quickly, but wouldn't start. I tried plugging it into different outlets thinking that it couldn't come broken! Low and behold it started up, jammed then would not start again. Don't waste your money on this machine.
TERRIBLE [Posted on 2008-06-14] THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS $199 UNIT AND MY POCKET KNIFE IS THAT MY POCKET KNIFE ALWAYS CUTS AND NEVER JAMS.
I WISH I HAD REFUSED SHIPMENT ON THIS ITEM AND WISH I HAD DONE SO BECAUSE OF ITS LATE ARRIVAL. IT HAS NUMEROUS DESIGN FLAWS THAT PREVENT IT FROM PERFORMING THE FUNCTION IT IS ADVERTISED TO DO, CHIP AND SHRED. THE GUARD PLATE IS SET TOO FAR FROM THE BLADE SO THAT IT SPLINTERS 1/4 INCH PIECES OF CUTTINGS BETWEEN THE PLATE AND BLADE, BYPASSING THE CUTTING PROCESS AND JAMMING THE BLADE AGAINST THE CLIPPING AND PLATE. THIS BRINGS THE CHIPPER TO A SCREECHING HALT, FOLLOWED BY A LENGTHY CLEARANCE PROCESS. CHIPS AND CUTTINGS DON'T PROCEED SMOOTHLY FROM THE BLADE, WHICH IS A REAL JOKE. AS CUTTINGS PROCEED DOWN THE CHUTE, THEY ARE MET BY FIVE VERTICALLY ALIGNED GUIDES MEANT TO CHANNEL CLIPPINGS OUT OF THE UNIT BUT THEY JUST TRAP THEM INSIDE. I SPENT MORE TIME CLEARING STOPPAGES THAN CUTTING. I HAVE STOPPED IN DISGUST WITH A HUGE PILE OF LIMBS STILL NEEDING TO BE WHITTLED DOWN TO SIZE. LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE A LONG PROCESS THIS YEAR.
McCulloch Chipper/Shredder [Posted on 2008-07-01] I thought it would be more powerful than it is. It does not chip as well as I had expected. Leaves go through without any shredding at all. It is neccessary to crush the dry debris as I feed it in. Even then, it has to be put through multiple times to get a consistency for mulch.
