Best thing since sliced bread! [Posted on 2000-06-14] These Melnor brass quick-connects are wonderful. I've been using them for several years now, and have a 46C on each faucet and on the distant end of each hose. I have a 47C on each nozzle, sprinker, hose-end sprayer, and hose. I was first "spoiled" by using similar fittings on my air lines and tools, and when I found out they were available for garden hoses, I "hooked myself up." Once you've had a hose with these things on it, you'll never go back.......
Melnor Brass QC [Posted on 2001-01-09] I had two problems with my Brass QC's. 1) The reduced diameter created a much slower flow, most noticable when I hooked up my Jet Stream nozzle that I use for cleaning the concrete slabs in my yard. 2) They Leaked. I ordered in three of these Brass Quick Connectors. It became apparent that QC definitely stood for Quick Connector and NOT Quality Control. Of the six that I ordered in, Three leeked. Thats right, they leaked out of the back of the socket side. I was able to fix two of them. One of them, the first I attempted to repair, now has a broken screw. So be warned if you order these in I would order about twice as many as you need as half may leek. Also if you go to repair the item, first take out the screw that positions the sliding locking mechanism. It is a little set screw that will snap from the torque required to get a good seal on the back of the socket. I took the limited amount of pipe dope off of the threads and used teflon tape. This succesfully fixed the leak. If any one from Melnor is reading this, perhaps a fixture at the plant can be devised to test for leakage, or even better redesign the product so that you get an O-ring seal on the body rather then just seating the metal against metal.
raspberry [Posted on 2006-06-28] I give a hearty raspberry to this product. As others have noted, it leaks. And the male fitting sits so far down in some devices, you can't get a hold of the wrench ledges on it to completely tighten it in. Then the female fitting won't sit down well over the male because the device's leading edge is in the way. So you have to use washers to build out the male unit. After all that, the things still leak where the two fittings come together. Plastic quick connects don't have as much of a problem there, though they eventually crack and break. Which is why we go to metal ones in the first place. I have a brass one I bought several years ago, probably not a Melnor, but it doesn't have a brand mark. Unlike the Melnor, it is well built, fits good, and never leaks.
And I can't figure out why Melnor uses the description "Automatic Shutoff", cuz all the 45C units I can find do not have the valve inside the female fitting. I'm both confused and dissappointed.
