A classy sprinkler that also gets the job done [Posted on 2006-08-15]
I decided to pick up one of these back-and-forth sprinklers after dealing with the problems of the unevel spray from a circular model. The sprinkler looks really nice, with brass jets, metal construction, and what looks to be a hand-numbered serial number written on the bottom in gold pen. Classy.
Mine came with a little white air bubble on the plastic that holds the oscillating bar, but it doesn't really affect the performance or overall looks. What did give me some problems, however, was the fact that the oscillating bar can shift its position in the plastic. After fiddling with the spray adjuster knob for a while, trying to get it to spray on both sides, I decided to try and turn the jets myself. Turns out it had just shifted out of place. Maybe it had gotten knocked out of place during shipping or soething, but it's all better now.
Now my lawn is well-watered, so I need to find another excuse. Can't fault the manufacturer for that.

I didn't realize how much I liked this sprinkler until after I tried replacing it with a LR Nelson 3030. Nothing was wrong with mine mind you, it's just that I wanted to "treat" myself to a new sprinkler.
I have the Craftsman version of this sprinkler (Sears Metal Oscillating Sprinkler with Low Profile Design #79058) and while it appears Sears has dropped it, luckily, Melnor decided to keep it in production.
It is a heavy, well made unit with brass nozzles as well as a brass hose connection so it should definitely stand up for the long haul (I've owned mine for 8 years).
Why not 5 stars?
Two things...
1. The adjustment knob could use some better designing-LR Nelson has Melnor beat here.
2.I wish there was an adjustment for the width like so many other sprinklers out there. I have to turn down the spigot to control just how wide I need to go.
Other than those issues it is a great watering tool!

After spending a fortune on cheap plastic sprinklers I am very glad I found this sturdy metal one. A great deal for the price. I highly recommend!

fast shipment...works OK.
Question about the sprinkler arm...There is one hole in the middle of the arm that looks like it should have a "nipple" but it is empty. It still works but just wonder why it is empty.
Parts Missing, Poor Quality, Not packaged well [Posted on 2007-09-20]
After buying a new sprinkler every year, I decided to order a "quality" sprinkler this year. Maybe it would last a bit longer.
When I opened the package, I noticed:
- Some of the parts were missing. Some of the "jets" (on top, where the water exits) were missing, so there were large holes.
- There was no rubber gasket for the hose to attach. Huge leaks.
- Several of the control parts seemed to be made of cheap plastic.
Fortunately, Amazon has a great return policy. So I packed it up and sent it back.
