This book was pretty useless [Posted on 2005-06-07] This book was basically useless when it came to giving useful, usable information. The author spends a great deal of time going over angles, degrees and the like. It just doesn't have to be that complicated!!
The useful piece of information I did get out of the book was to add 2 feet to each room's dimensions so you have enough material. Other than that, there are much more informative and usable sources of information on installing crown available.
The book is also out of date when it comes to tools. For example, have you ever heard of a cordless or air-powered nail gun? How about a dual-bevel compound miter saw? This author has not, or at least does not metion them in his book. These items would make installing crown a lot easier and faster.
Lastly, the True Anlge tools he sells are of limited use, too. They are very accurate in reading an angle, but they are made of thin, flimsy plastic and the ends of the tool droop when you are holding it up in a corner. The scale on the tool is so small it is impossible to read when you have the tool positioned in a corner. Using the lock screw is somewhat helpful, but it is difficult to do when you have two hands holding up the flimsy ends of the tool.
My whole-house crown project turned out great, but no thanks to this book and the true angle tool. I would look elsewhere for instuction and look to Starret for a good protractor.
Complicated, horrible writing, tiny diagrams, flimsy tool [Posted on 2005-08-22] The order of topics in the book could hardly be less logical and the six point type on the diagrams means it's easy to skip a key fact. There are no bullet points or numbering, no prioritizing what facts are important. In fact, the book is filled with little advertisements for other products by the author. Almost half the book is filled with little projects and advice about miter boxes, etc.
I have good vision and noting the degrees on the True Angle tool requires putting your head at a perfect angle to see the degree and within just a few inches of the tool. As others have mentioned the True Angle is truly flimsy and the nut is easily loosened while you try to measure.
Crown Molding & trim Kit [Posted on 2005-09-05] This book is great! I have been installing crown molding for years, but this has shown me some little tricks of the trade the everyone can use. Those angle finders are also a big help for corners that are out of square and compound angles too.
With out this book kiss your crown molding good-bye [Posted on 2006-08-06] This is a great book I have never installed crown molding before, this book not only gives you solid knowledge but help is available from the company. My crown was so closely put together using the information. Also I was cutting an out side corner on my base molding I thought would be so easy I did it with out the angle finder kiss that molding good-bye. And yes the angle finders are small and flimsy but you have a screw and nut to hold it in place while reading it. If you want a better angle finder Amazon has them for around $50 to $125 his will do the same thing but is a little harder to read.
For those of us with little or no experience [Posted on 2007-05-29] This book had the diagrams and pictures necessary for me to do the work. I would have wasted a lot of wood and time trying to figure out the correct angles on my own. Whith this book at my elbow, I could glance at a picture and see that I had the saw set correctly and the piece of wood placed the right way. I strongly recommed the book for people trying to cut molding for the first time.
The angle measurement tools can be useful, but I whish they were built from better quality materials and larger scales that could be read from a distance.
