Customer Reviews:

Am I the only one who needs this to work with a guide fence? [Posted on 2003-10-01]
I bought this one because I wanted the dust chute. Yes I connect up to my dust vaccuum and will use it that way indoors, so the dust chute is a plus that I could not find in any other saw.

However, the first job I put the saw to use on was to cut 1/4" off the bottom of some ill fitting doors. The bottoms were not square to the sides so I planned to run the saw against my trusty clamp-on-guide and found that the saw's motor housing got in the way of the guide.

Having read the other reviews here, I learned that I should be able to adjust the depth of cut on the blade and this will probably solve my problem, but another reviewer complained that the saw would not go back in the box unless the setting was reset to max first. Furthermore, he suggested that making these adjustments was problematic.

I was heading back to the store to return the saw and hunt for one better featured but I'm heading down to the shop first to see what the P.I.T.A factor is in adjusting the depth of cut first. Since this is the only saw I've found that has a dust control chute, I'll probably keep it if the P.I.T.A factor is small.

I agree that a rip fence should be included for the price and that it and a spare blade be made room for in the poorly designed case.

Good luck.

Porter Cable's Grim RIPPER [Posted on 2004-01-25]
This saw makes minced meat out of anything you put in front of it. Its 15 amps absolutely tears thru 3/4 ply and 2X stock with ease. This thing is also very well thought out. It has a thumb indent on the left front of the table for guiding the saw with your left hand during fine cuts, it has measurements on everything including depth markings and marks to edge of table, has a chord keeper so you can wrap up the chord and lock it in place, and most of all, you can keep your left hand on the forehandle while holding the blade guard up for plunge cuts without having your hand near the exposed blade all due to its extra long handle (see picture) on the blade guard. In the past year i have worked a new dewalt, a new makita with LED, and a hitachi framing saw and this one takes the cake with all its nice little features. Dont let the lack of a blade brake stop you from purchasing this awesome saw- the makita doesnt have a brake either and both of them are nicer than the dewalt which comes standard with the brake.

5 years strong [Posted on 2004-02-08]
i started in carpentry 5+ years ago and tried everybody else's saw before buying this one (as i did with all my first-purchase tools). it is the lightest, most comfortable, plenty of power, and after being tossed around, dropped, cutting every material imaginable with all different blades, cutting thru 2 or 3 cords, it still is my favorite tool, and the one i feel most confident with in my hands. i have 5 porter cable tools now, and none have been a disappointment. quality stuff, buy it.

Solid Saw! [Posted on 2004-02-17]
I was loooking for a solid 7 1/4 inch saw to use for framing and other general home repair tasks. I checked out the Skil 77 and while it seemed to be built like a tank and would probably outlast me, it was awkward to handle. The PC 347 has a nice balanced feel, plenty of power (15 A motor) and a rigid, perfectly sized magnesium base plate. I've only used it on wood so far but it definatley seems to have the power to cut through just about anything. The dust chute seems pretty effective in diverting most of the debris away from the operator. Though I do wish they would include a dust collection bag. I'm sure there are better saws out there but this one a great value - solidly built, very comfortable to use and the price is right. Worth every penny and then some!

9 years of daily use and still going strong [Posted on 2004-03-23]
This saw has been a battle axe and has enough power to keep my worm drive in its box most of the time. The base is accurately calibrated and doesn't clog or "float"like other saws out there. I am not in love with all Porter Cable products, but this saw is top quality right along with their routers. Mine is the 347 (no "K"-- for Kit) because the "K" model was not out yet. I love the dust port and miss it when I use a saw without one. In my opinion, the only true competitor in the under $150 price range is Bosch and that saw is heavier with a smaller motor and I would not recommend the Makita saws that are in this class at all.
