Great Tool [Posted on 2002-12-03] I am a small remodeling contractor and have had my RoboLaser for 1 1/2 years. It has been used outside for decks and inside for counter/cabinet work and has performed flawlessly. It's a far cry better to use the robolaser than a bubble level or water level over long distances in regard to accuracy, speed and convenience. It is a precision tool and needs to be treated as such. If you're inclined to use a 2 foot aluminum level as a hammer or a 4 foot aluminum level as a pry bar then this is not the tool for you. If you use words like "throw", "toss", "bang", "banging around", "slam" when describing how you use your tools, you'll probably break this laser (and probably most precision tools). If you fancy yourself a bit more refined, then by all means, invest in this tool. As a side note I've contacted the people at RoboToolz.com (by phone) and found them to be very helpful.
Good Performance for the Money [Posted on 2003-01-18] I purchased by robolaser last year (without the line generator and tripod) and have used it on several projects. I have been pleased with its performance. I have never had to recalibrate it though I treat it gently. For example, I am always sure to shut the slide over the "eye" of the laser as this locks the mechanism to prevent damage. The tool has worked for me and I would recommend it to others. Be aware that this tool eats batteries and I always travel with spares in the case to avoid having to stop and go buy more. I recently purchased a laser pole for interior work and a tripod is a great idea for exterior work.
Good for the money, bad for the pro!! [Posted on 2003-04-25] We have purchased five (5) Robo Lasers, and just because we have made that many purchases of it should let you know that there is something we like about it. It works well and the fact that it is self leveling and remote control, makes a one man project out of most line setting. The "bad for the pro" as formentioned comes from the experience that we have had with it. It is kind of like a hologen light..... it is great to have when you need it, but knock it over just once and you just as well throw it in the roll-off dumpster. My crew find themselves working outside in the breeze and sometimes wind quite frequently.... the laser on the tripod and a brisk breese = no more laser level... be prepaired to treat this one with kid gloves.
good buy! [Posted on 2003-06-29] At the last cabinet shop I worked at we were thinking about a laser level but never purchased one. I went to work at a high end cabinet shop and they have three of them. the owner said he wished he would have purcahased them when he was installing! we use it to find the high and low spots in the room to set our toe kick to. we make our marks then snap a line for reference, then use the stabila levels to fine tune. I was just on a job and I let the tile guy use it and he was very impressed ! he will be carrying one soon !!!
You Get What You Pay For [Posted on 2006-12-28] I did a little testing to this laser when I first received it and found it to be accurate to 3/8" at 50 feet. I attempted to use the calibration screw to pull it back into level and found the adjustment range was only long enough to move it about 1/8" at 50 feet. After a few weeks use it was ¾" out at 50 feet. I pulled the case to check out the calibration mechanism and found pot metal castings made in China. If you are laying out to within 10 feet of the laser, reasonably accurate lines can be shot otherwise eyeballing is about as accurate. Considering a self-leveling laser made in Switzerland can cost 12 to 15 times as much, it is not reasonable to expect the same performance from each. But level is level, and anything else is out of level. If you include leveling something in the list of horseshoes and hand grenades (close is good enough) then this may do the job for you. If not, you would be better served with a good old fashioned water level. I take issue with a previous review that touts the laser's superiority to a water level. Gravity never goes out of calibration, and a tube full of water will always be the same level at both ends.
