Works as advertised [Posted on 2005-10-02] This add-on edger definitely works as well as I expected. It takes a little getting used to but does a great job once you get the hang of it. The debris flap on the back side is pretty useless, so make sure you're wearing pants while edging. This is the first add-on I've purchased for my Ryobi 725r and am quite happy with it's performance.
Nice add-on to the base unit [Posted on 2006-05-28] I have the Ryobi add-on to my YardMan electric base unit that originally was sold as a string trimmer. Prior to purchasing this unit, I used the string trimmer at an awkward angle edge my lawn. There is no comparison - the edger does a fantastic job.
I hadn't edged with an edger prior to this, so I followed the instructions to a tee. That is, because I hadn't edged my lawn before and had a thick buildup along my sidewalk margins, I knew not to set the unit to its deepest cut on the first pass and expect it to work well. Rather, I made two or three passes at successively deeper cuts and it worked like a charm.
I live in AZ and cut through very fibrous, "rooty" Bermudagrass along with hard clay-rich soil, and the unit performs well. As others have noted, going backwards often performs better than using a forward motion, but once the initial edge is made, maintenance edging is a snap in either direction.
There are only a couple of minor downsides in my opinion: the debris flap sometimes prevents easy backwards motion; carry a screwdriver or putty knife to knock off dirt or mud buildup off of the blade guard; the curved shaft makes it difficult to cut in close quarters, but I just turn the unit around and cut from the opposite direction and it works fine, even though this may seem counterintuitive.
Overall, this is a decent addition to my tool collection. If one doesn't expect this unit to hack through the Amazon (no pun intended) Jungle on the first pass, one won't be disappointed.
Nice add-on for 725r [Posted on 2006-07-11] The edger does a nice, easy job except for the first edge of the season, which takes a little extra time. If you can't find a Ryobi replacement blade, bring the blade to your local lawnmower shop for a generic replacement.
Do not buy this edger attachment... a waste of money. [Posted on 2007-09-07] I received it and I ground a cutting edge on the blade. Then, I started edging and I found that the Ryobi engine was bogged down by the work of the edger. I kept the throttle wide open as I edged but the edger could not cut very well. I actually twisted off the upper shaft in less than 10 minutes of edging. (The edger slowed down the driven rpm's, but the engine speed was up.) So, the Ryobi is great for a string trimmer or a blower, but NOT for use with the edger.
Weed wackers not rugged enough [Posted on 2007-12-12] Learned through experience that Ryobi's trimmer is just not rugged enough to handle an edger attachment. The cable broke soon after I bought the attachment. I bought another weed wacker and will buy an edger separately.
