Okay, but has some problems [Posted on 2007-08-05] First, this item was in the box and ready to go. The assembly was well organized. I only had to tighten the skirt and install the wheel.
Did not last very long. The hand holder that really supprts the trimmer was poorly designed and while tighteneing the holder, I managed to pull the bolt/nut all the way through! It may have been missing a washer that should have been installed at the factory. No worry, they sent me a new handle. Working well.
Not so fast. You need a degree in Engineering to get the string to wrap around the spool. Remember this trimmer does have two strings and does cut nice. It just seems to be a maintainable nightmare. The only saving grace is that I do not have to mix gas and oil nor provide a space for a battery charger.
Fast & Strong [Posted on 2007-10-02] This is definitely a robust machine that makes short work of edging and trimming. It is aso powerful enough that care should be taken to wear protective gear including footware that will protect the ankles as this little jewel will turn any small loose objects it is passed over into high speed projectiles.
The only drawback is the rapid demise of the light .065 diameter line used if any solid objects come into contact with the line.
Shame Shame Shame [Posted on 2008-03-05] Shame Shame Shame, Shame on you Troy-Bilt for discontinuing the TB50 Electric string trimmer, It Is obvious that you don't care about Anyone but yourself! For absolutely NO reason you discontinued the TB50 and don't feed Me that lie, "They were not selling! The TB50 was the only Electric string trimmer that could run the metal blades without burning up the Motor In Oklahoma humid tick Infested jungle. And don't give Me that, "Get a gas powered one! Do they come with a Electric starter? A Person could drop dead In Oklahoma humidity trying to start a gas powered trimmer. Around here keeping the weeds down Is not matter of looking like the Jones It Is a matter of Not getting a tick transmitted disease....
Strong, good cutting, fair edger, could use some improvement [Posted on 2008-03-17] I selected this one because it has 2 cutting strings (BIG plus) and because of the edging wheel over other brands/models. It cuts very well, but is a bit awkward for me to use (I'm left handed).
I took the little edging wheel off after a couple of uses as I felt it was more trouble than it was worth. The trimmer pivots at the trigger handle for edging; this means that you have to pull the shaft handle around before you can use it (rather than pivoting at the power head). There is a length adjustment, which I love as I'm 6'6" tall and most trimmers force me to walk bent over to use.
The main improvement this machine needs is a simpler, working string advance. At best it very flimsy. And should you have the misfortune to break a line off at the spool, well I hope you have 3 hands. You have to get the line out of the inside feed ring (which feeds from the top and bottom at the same time), through 2 holes on the spinning head (you see you need one hand to hold each string sticking out in place and the third hand can then easily feed the strings through the holes in the external head) before you push it back on the trimmer. It's pretty much a nightmare, but with practice and LOTS of patience evidently I got the swing of it.
I would have liked to give these unit 3.5 stars, for power, adjustability and that so far it's been rugged enough to stand up the uses I've put it through. But I've only given it 3 because of the really BAD line feed system.
Hope this helps.
JUNK [Posted on 2008-05-26] Broke in less than 5 minutes. ALL plastic. I have gone back to using out 15 year old cheapo Black & Decker unit. It has no edger to it's weed eater function like this one does, but nothing has broke either!
ONLY good part? The manufacturer refunded our money in full. Told me to just throw this one away. At least the company had a touch of class in customer service. STUNNED they would make such a horribly under engineered product however. I only made it about 5 feet edging when pieces flew everywhere.....BEWARE!
