Don't Buy! [Posted on 2006-08-18]
I have had many trimmers over the years. When it came to replace by last one I wanted one that started easy and had a good line feed. Even though it was expensive, I picked this one because it made both claims and was a 4 cycle. This is my second season and I'm about ready to trash it. The line feed is the worst I have ever used. I have replaced parts thinking that that would help, tried different line sizes and different winding techniques. I still can't trim my average size lawn without stopping, disassembling and rewinding the string three or four times. I'm happy with the starting and the power but the string system is terrible. It winds up easy enough but in use it breaks off internally and binds on itself.

Troy-Bilt TB475SS Gas Trimmer [Posted on 2006-10-16]
I have owned this trimmer for about 2-1/2 years. I have always kept the oil at the appropriate level which is easy to check. And up till now I had been using this tool for line edging as well as cutting schrubs every other week.

Once a year I change the oil and replace it with fresh oil and clean the air filter which is very easy to do. I have an average size yard and treat all my tools with respect.

However recently I had an issue with the trimmer after I had used it without problems several weeks prior. I thought something was seriously wrong because I could not pull the cable to start it.

It acted like it was somehow binding. I could not believe the motor had anything seriously wrong as again the last time I had used it it worked fine.

I unscrewed the handle with the trigger...(you will need torx bits for this) and unscrewed the black plastic cone peice in front of the motor.

I used half a can of ballistol which is a lubricant like wd40 and hosed the wound cable and its interior components completely. With a plastic drop cloth under it. There was a serious amount of grime rinsed out.

After I shook the unit and removed as much of the residual cleaner as possible with a clean rag, I put the cone peice back on. I put the handle assy back, and pulled the cable to try to start it and it worked perfectly.

Im just putting this into words for anyone who might experience a problem like this. Dont throw out your Troy Bilt without first trying to clean it.

This unit probably should never have been designed for trimming schrubs. It is cable driven internally, and you probably will break it if you get caught on a branch that is too big for its capacity. It is also heavy and cumbersome for trimming hedges with the shoulder strap or not.

I use the line trimmer to edge with and it works great! It gets to the places the edger cant. You may also be suprised to see that the edger component works very well also.

The blower is an awesome component as well.

But for hedges and schrubs I prefer an electric trimmer like the Black and Decker hedgehog with the 24 inch cutting blade. Especially if you are cutting hedges that are five or six feet high.

The Black and Decker Hedgehog (electric)is considerably more quiet when your holding the unit up high (near your ear) regardless of the hearing protection you may have on or not! And if I break the hedgehog I am not out the money that the Troy Bilt would cost to repair or replace.

Again I love this Troy Bilt. I am approaching my third year now and since cleaning it out, it again runs and sounds as quiet and smooth as the day I bought it new. It starts everytime with one to two pulls of the cord at most, and is really an exceptional item!

great price, reliability, ex starts! [Posted on 2007-05-14]
Owned for almost 1 year with zero complaints - works perfect - no problems at all! I mostly use the blower (almost daily!) and edger attachments and they've made my life much easier!

A real meat-eater  [Posted on 2007-07-07]
This is a great trimmer. I've used gas powered trimmers many years ago but thought that I could get by with a battery-powered trimmer at my new home. After one summer the battery kept loosing it's charge quickly and an new battery was a pain to find. I got this trimmer and it was so easy without the oil and gas mixing and a very easy start. I'm 6' 1" so it was nice that I didn't have to bend as much as I did with the electric trimmer either. It shipped quickly and I was up and running with it in a matter of 20 minutes. The only draw back would be the lack of a shoulder strap (although I think its even lighter than my battery powered trimmer).

find a better trimmer... [Posted on 2008-06-24]
Ergonomically, the trimmer is OK. It's kinda heavy, but that's to be expected with a 4-cycle engine. The severe vibration limits my trimming sessions to only 5-10 min tops. The biggest problem, however, has only revealed itself after a season (maybe 10 hours) of use: the engine is smoking and stalling out after a few minutes running. After ensuring it had oil and fresh gas (4-cycle, so no gas/oil mix) and the problem still occurred, I went online to find a service center. None within 50 miles of my zip code. The company (called MTD, but still uses the Troy-Bilt name) was no help at all. I've looked into other repair facilities, but I can't identify who actually manufactures the engine, so nobody will take it apart. I'm either left to fiddle with it myself, or to get another trimmer.
