Superb Value [Posted on 2008-05-09] This is a soldering station is a great value. Adjustable heat settings, replacable tips, seperate stand for the iron, and a neat tip cleaning method is everything you need to get professional results. I bought this soldering station to build a few audio amplifiers and make some custom audio cables. I can do nothing but praise the performance of the Xytronic. The brass scouring pad-looking thing that sets into the base of the iron holder does a remarkable job of keeping my iron tip clean. I cannot see the need to move up to a high priced iron like a Weller when this Xytronic unit does everything I need it to do.
Solid tool [Posted on 2008-06-05] I bought this on the basis of other positive reviews, and I am definitely happy with the product. I've been doing soldering on an amateur basis for a few decades, mostly with poor tools. This should work great for a wide variety of electrical/electronic projects.
Replacement tips [Posted on 2008-07-06] Regarding replacement tips...
High quality replacement tips are available from a number of web vendors, e.g., Howard Electronics. Tips for the Model 379 are interchangeable with Xytronic Model Nos. 136, 136ESD, 137ESD, 456DLX, 988, 988D, and 107ESD. For general circuit board work, I'd recommend the 1/16-inch "screwdriver" chisel tip, mfr. no. B04.
Also, it's been reported elsewhere that the Hakko 900M tips also work. [Reference: [...]]
There are cheap tips available on eBay, but buyer beware! I recommend you stick with Hakko, Aoyue, and Xytronic name-brand replacement tips. It's not wise to spend good money on a quality soldering station and then waste it on cheap tips.

Great value, but need to replace cord right away. [Posted on 2008-08-29] As the other reviews say, this soldering station is a great value -- you can't beat the price, and it's a very good unit. Only problem is the cord that attaches the base unit to the iron itself. The outer jacket of this cord is extremely soft and gummy and it falls apart when you touch it. I think this is because they try to make it from a type of silicone that is burn resistent -- but in reality, it's quite dangerous because a firm touch exposes the wires inside. Plus the cord is so gummy that it sticks to anything it touches. This needs to be replaced almost immediatly on the unit. Fortunately, the iron and base come apart easily, and the cord is also easy to get to and replace (of course you'll need another soldering iron to complete this). Once replacing the cord, the unit works great.
