After two runs I am very pleased with this chipper. It does dry 1.5 inch oak twigs with ease. The rotor-motor assembly is heavy. Looks like quality construction. Should last a long time. Check back here in ten years. Excellent value for $268.21 which includes shipping and tax.
A good and versatile shredder [Posted on 2008-04-22]
This is a good and versatile shredder.It easily deals with small branches, and did decent work with a pile of dried prairie grass (though loading that stuff into the machine takes time...) Set up was fairly easy and the directions did make sense. There was an extra, metal plug included with the machine - for which there was no mention in the directions, nor any visible place to put it. A bit odd, that.
The machine also ran well with a fairly lengthy extension chord that we use for our lawn mower.

I read other comments from people who had trouble assembling this machine.
I'd say that as long as you are a Republican, then you should probably be able to figure out how to assemble and use it. If you're a Democrat, then you'll want to find a Republican to help you assemble it and train you on its use.
Democrats can blame their failure on the company that manufactured it... or George Bush.
The instructions are crystal clear. If you make a mistake, it's no big deal to fix - nothing is permanent. It took me about 15 minutes to put it together.
I've used it to chop up a huge pile of yard waste in my backyard, and it did it without a problem. It pretty much chops up most of whatever you can fit in the "stick hole". Just be patient and don't try to shove big sticks in quickly.
Also, just kidding about the Democrats thing. Truth is, this machine is so easy to use, even a Democrat can probably figure it out.

The Unit was simple to assemble. It is easy to move around. It has its limitations in the size and quantity of material it can consume at a time. Feeding sticks that are too large will cause it to jam and shut down. You have to get a feeling for how to feed the machine and when to hold back from over loading. After a few tries I figured it out.
You have to make sure that when you turn it off, you have completely cleared any material you fed it. If you shut it down before completing a batch, it will jam on start up.
For the price, it is a handy machine for simple yard clean ups. This is not meant for any heavy duty purpose.

The first thing I must note is that when ordering the Yard Machines chipper, you may get a McCulloch chipper. It's the same thing but I thought that was odd. On a more important note, I have used the chipper 2 times and both times it has performed up to my expectations. I cut a major amount of privacy bushes and I have piles and piles of sticks to chip as a result. The chipper makes very small pieces, which works well, as they will be placed around my yard where my dogs walk often. So far, I cannot comment on the durability of the item, but it seems like a very solid piece of equipment, with very little plastic. The chute at the top is for mulching twigs, leaves and the like, and I will be using that during the fall months to makes compost for the garden. All in all, this appears to be money well spent and an item that will pay for itself in about a year.
